Over 2,000 unannounced health and safety inspections this month

Over 2,000 building sites across the UK will be visited by Government health and safety inspectors this month.

Local inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - Britain’s national regulator for workplace safety - will be making unannounced visits to target poor safety standards in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.

HSE inspectors will be checking high-risk activities such as working with harmful materials is managed properly and checking that the welfare facilities are adequate.

Veteran BBC broadcaster David Jacobs dies aged 87

The veteran BBC broadcaster David Jacobs has died at the age of 87.

Jacobs stepped down from his Radio 2 programme only last month due to ill health. He died at home "surrounded by his family", according to a BBC statement.

David Jacobs began his career at the BBC in 1945, enjoying a seven-decade career during which time he presented many classic and popular programmes, including Housewives' Choice, Juke Box Jury, Any Questions, Top Of The Pops and The Eurovision Song Contest as well as his long running Radio 2 show.

Retail boss claims 20,000 independent shops at risk as he slams Queen of Shops' review

The former chief of chain stores Wickes and Iceland has claimed that 20,000 independent shops in the UK are at risk of closing, in an alternative report into the high street to be published this week.

Bill Grimsey has criticised a government report and high street rescue strategy overseen by 'Queen Of Shops", Mary Portas, as "little more than a PR stunt". Sir David Frost, legend of broadcasting, dies aged 74

The legendary broadcaster Sir David Frost has died following a suspected heart attack while on board a cruise ship, his family have announced. He was 74.

Tributes have begun pouring in for the veteran writer and broadcaster, many via Twitter.

The RSPCA has confirmed it will not call for farmers involved in the badger cull to be named following a complaint by the NFU to the Charity Commission.

The NFU raised a number of concerns with the Charity Commission about the RSPCA’s campaigns on the badger cull and its activities relating to live animal exports. The concerns included the RSPCA’s Chief Executive calling for farmers involved in the badger cull to be named and for a boycott of milk from farmers in badger cull areas.

Bradshaw accuses Cameron of a 'terrible miscalculation' over Syria

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw has accused David Cameron, of an act of "terrible miscalculation" in his attempt to persuade MPs to support military action against Syria.

Mr Bradshaw said the action led to the Commons voting against Britain taking military action – by accident.

Cleaver-weilding man arrested in Barnstaple

A man has been arrested by police after wielding a large meat cleaver in a Barnstaple street.

At around 1.45am on Tuesday 27 August, police were called to a report of a man hitting lamp posts with a cleaver in Hughes Avenue.

On arrival, officers were confronted by the suspect who was still using the cleaver to damage lamp posts as well as other street furniture.

Officer were forced to withdraw after being threatened by the armed suspect and ensured any residents who had ventured onto the street to go back indoors while they awaited backup from firearms officers....

Badger culls are underway

The National Farmers Union today announced that pilot badger culls have started to help bring bovine TB under control.

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease of cattle. The scale of infection and the cost make bovine TB one of the biggest challenges that the cattle farming industry faces, particularly in the west and south west of England.

These culls are being carried out in Gloucestershire and Somerset, which are TB hotspot areas, by trained professionals.
