Unemployment rate in the South West unchanged as UK sees an overall 0.1% fall

The South West continues to see one of the UK's highest rates of employment, despite a slight fall in employment of 0.7% to 73.9% in the period from May to July. The rate of unemployment for the region remained unchanged at 6.2%.

The Office for National Statistics has released both national and regional figures for the last financial quarter.

The overall UK unemployment rate dropped by 0.1% from the previous quarter, from 7.8% to 7.7%, though a number of variations can be seen around the country, with some areas experiencing rising unemployment.

Mercury Prize set to announce albums of the year shortlist

The Barclaycard Mercury Prize Albums of the Year 2013 shortlist will be announced at 5.30pm on Wednesday (11 September).

The annual "music Booker" panel select 12 of the best and most significant UK music releases, before judging a winner at a ceremony on Wednesday 30 October.

Previous winners have included Primal Scream, Suede, Elbow, PJ Harvey (the only artist to scoop the award twice) and last year, Alt-J for their debut album An Awesome Wave .

Government supports Will donation campaign

The government has lent its support to encourage people to leave money to charity in their wills.

As part of this week’s Remember A Charity in your Will campaign the Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd will call on UK solicitors to raise the topic with clients.

The joint letter from the minister and Remember A Charity will accompany a nationwide poster campaign and social media campaign to raise public awareness.

Already supporting the campaign are the Co-operative Legal Services which will be promoting charitable bequests to customers in the process of writing...

Petition against badger cull reaches 300,000 signatures

A petition calling on the Government to put a stop to the pilot badger cull climbed to 300,000 in the two weeks since the first animal was shot.

There has been a marked rise in the number of people signing the number 10 e-petition since the pilot culls began in areas of Somerset and Gloucestershire.

It had already become the biggest ever petition on the Government’s website in July when it passed 258,000 signatures. Now more than 40,000 extra people have agreed that the policy is not the answer to controlling bovine TB in cattle.

Ed Miliband will today (Tuesday 10 September) declare his ambition to build a mass membership One Nation Labour Party rooted in the lives of working people and communities across Britain.

Toddler "stable" after fall from fifth-floor window in Plymouth flat

A 16-month-old toddler is described as being in a "serious but stable condition" in Derriford Hospital after falling more than 100ft (30 metres) from a fifth-floor flat on Saturday morning.

The girl, who has not been named, suffered internal injuries after the fall from the window of her home just off Savage Road, in the Barne Barton area of Plymouth.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the incident which happened just before 8.30am on Saturday 7 July. The little girl was quickly taken to hospital.
