New HMRC service announced for workers to take control of their tax affairs

Workers are set to take control of their tax affairs as the government today (21 July 2025) announces a new online Pay As You Earn (PAYE) service for around 35 million UK taxpayers as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sets out more than 50 measures to transform the UK’s tax and customs system.

The new online service for all PAYE taxpayers will make it simpler and easier to check and update their income, allowances, reliefs and expenses, and will be available via their Personal Tax Account or through the HMRC app.

Level crossing dangers highlighted

Network Rail is joining the British Transport Police (BTP) at level crossings across Britain this week, as part of the BTP’s ‘Operation Look’ awareness campaign.

Motorists and pedestrians are risking their lives and those of other road and rail users at level crossings. The week of action provides officers and safety managers from Network Rail with an opportunity to speak to thousands of people about how to use crossings safely and highlight the risks. ‘Operation Look’ has received backing from both the AA and the RAC.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), with two City-Centre shops was delighted to receive funds of over £5700 presented by Wealth Management Company, Brewin Dolphin, Exeter office.

The money will go towards the general care budget and could fund the food bill at the Barnstaple hospice, Little Bridge House, for six weeks.

A share of £100,000 is up for grabs as part of a new community energy competition launched today by Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Edward Davey. Suicide rate behind bars rises

Eighty-two prisoners took their own lives during 2014 as the suicide rate behind bars rose to its highest level for seven years.

They included 14 young adults, aged between 18 and 24, data compiled by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal.

In total, 235 people died in prisons in England and Wales during 2014. More than 120 prisoners died of natural causes, and a further 24 deaths are yet to be classified by authorities.
