New HMRC service announced for workers to take control of their tax affairs

Workers are set to take control of their tax affairs as the government today (21 July 2025) announces a new online Pay As You Earn (PAYE) service for around 35 million UK taxpayers as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sets out more than 50 measures to transform the UK’s tax and customs system.

The new online service for all PAYE taxpayers will make it simpler and easier to check and update their income, allowances, reliefs and expenses, and will be available via their Personal Tax Account or through the HMRC app.

NUT call for school holiday reform

The NUT has sparked debate by saying pupils should be able to skip school to go on holiday without their parents being penalised.

About 1,200 delegates attending the the union's national conference will vote on the parental fines motion this afternoon (Saturday).

The motion seeks to repeal the relevant amendments to the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2013, which has led to parents taking children out of school being fined unless there are “exceptional circumstances”.

Pair sentenced for courier fraud

Two men were sentenced at Bristol Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday 10 March) for defrauding vulnerable people out of over £88,000.

Rahim Choudhury and Abdul Shafee, both 19, of Quaker Street, London, were sentenced to 38 months and 15 months in prison, respectively.

In early January 2015, Rahim Choudhury (pictured right) pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud offences where 30 victims were defrauded of a total of £88,500.

Stamp price rises at end of month

The Royal Mail is reminding people that, from the 30th March, the price of first and second class postage stamps will increase by 1p each. This means first class postage stamps will be 63p and second class postage stamps will be 54p.
