New HMRC service announced for workers to take control of their tax affairs

Workers are set to take control of their tax affairs as the government today (21 July 2025) announces a new online Pay As You Earn (PAYE) service for around 35 million UK taxpayers as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sets out more than 50 measures to transform the UK’s tax and customs system.

The new online service for all PAYE taxpayers will make it simpler and easier to check and update their income, allowances, reliefs and expenses, and will be available via their Personal Tax Account or through the HMRC app.

From midday today (FRIDAY) the price of unleaded petrol hit 99.9p at all of Tesco’s 500 Petrol filling stations. There’ll also be a penny drop on diesel meaning no customer misses out by shopping at Tesco this Christmas.

Peter Cattell, Fuel Director for Tesco said: “We want to do all we can to help our customers in the run-up to Christmas. We know that our customers really value low fuel prices and that having unleaded for 99.9p a litre will really give customers a boost over the festive period.

A home workshop in Reading is today playing a vital role in the reconstruction of EDSAC, the Cambridge University machine that 65 years ago led the world’s computing revolution and today is being reconstructed and assembled at The National Museum of Computing on Bletchley Park where the process can be watched by Museum visitors.

Government commits to review pavement parking policy

A bill to strengthen and clarify the law on pavement parking was withdrawn last week (4 December) following a commitment from Government to undertake a policy review and convene a round table next year to further examine the implications of any legislative change.

The Pavement Parking Private Members’ Bill called for the law on pavement parking to be strengthened – only allowing people to park on pavements that have been specially designated to allow it, making it the exception rather than the rule.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman and child were seriously injured following a road traffic collision in Torquay at the weekend.

The collision happened shortly before 1.20pm on Sunday 22 November 2015 near the junction of Torbay Road and Sea Way Lane.

A trader who travelled the country offering to clean householder’s carpets, including that of a vulnerable dementia sufferer, for rock-bottom prices before hiking his charges by up to 5,400 per cent has plead guilty to seven offences.
