Free Landlord Expo, Plymouth Guildhall, 25 October

Since April 2009 Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service have attended domestic fire incidents causing eight fatalities within the West Devon area. In fact, in the same time period there have been 694 domestic fires in Plymouth, causing not only injury to 50 people, but also immeasurable suffering and disruption to people’s family and personal life.

The biggest cause of these accidental fires is cooking related. For the period from April 2009 until March 2011, 54% of Plymouth’s domestic fires were cooking related. Of these only 8% were attributed to faulty cooking equipment, meaning the vast majority of fires, being due to human error, could have been prevented.

Whilst human error accounts for 40% of all accidental dwelling fires, incidences range from careless handling, using too much oil, cooking whilst under the influence, not keeping an eye on cooking and leaving combustible items such as tea towels too close to hobs.

To help combat the risk of fire in people’s homes West Country Landlord’s Association in conjunction with Plymouth City Council are holding the Landlord Expo at Plymouth City Guildhall on the 25 October from 12noon until 7pm.

This free event is mainly directed at landlords who may not be aware of changes in legislation and safety equipment that is applicable to their property. It is a perfect opportunity for any landlord to obtain free advice from a number of Regulatory Authorities and engage with professional companies.

For people who live in rented accommodation or even those who own their home, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service will also have a Fire Engine and some demonstration units set up in Guildhall Square outside the guildhall. Firefighters will be on hand to give advice and see if you qualify for a free smoke detector.

So if you are a landlord please ensure your property is safe. If you are a tenant or live in your own home please make sure you test your smoke alarm and cook safely!
