Whitten seeks clinical edge

Authored by Mark Stevens

Ian Whitten believes a more clinical approach from the Exeter Chiefs is key if they are to topple the elite sides in this season’s Aviva Premiership.

Not for the first time in his playing career at Sandy Park, the 27-year-old Irishman saw his side fall just short of overcoming one of English rugby’s leading lights as they went down 24-20 to Leicester Tigers last Saturday.

In a theme similar to that of several encounters last season, the Chiefs failed to hold onto their half-time advantage and it was the Tigers who came back to claim a vital away-day win.

Exeter City grab a 2 for Tuesday!

Match report: Cambridge 1 Exeter City 2

Alex Nicholls’ first goal in almost two years was the match-winner for Exeter City away at Cambridge United on Tuesday evening.

The game took a disappointing turn at the start for Exeter when Ryan Bird was on hand to stroke in from close range as the ball ricocheted around the six-yard box, but a second goal in two games from Graham Cummins got the Grecians level less than ten minutes later.

City twice came within the width of the woodwork from taking the lead – David Wheeler and Matt Grimes both striking the upright – but...

Chiefs star Nowell happy to be back

Exeter Chiefs star Jack Nowell says he has never "felt so good" on a rugby pitch after he marked his return to competitive action by claiming a try-double in Monday night's A League victory over London Welsh.

The England international has been sidelined since March with injuries to both his shoulder and knee, but he showed within minutes of his return that he was firing on all cylinders and itching to return to first team duty.

The Cornishman featured for 34 minutes as the Exeter Braves - who also added tries through Ceri Sweeney, Tom James, Jack Arnott, Sam Skinner and...

Exeter teams in battle for British titles

Exeter is sending a strong message to this year’s Butcombe British Skittles Championships. No less than seven teams are through to the grand finals in Torquay on Saturday (Sept 20).

St Thomas Social Club is fielding five of the qualifiers, including the Allstars who have qualified for the fifth year running in the mens’ competition, along with the Saints who were knocked out in the second round last year.

Team secretary Dave Rowe said Saints’ confidence had been massively boosted by a win against the Mixers from Torbay, men’s champions four years ago and runners up in...

Sun shines for exciting Newton Abbot fixture

Ainsi Fideles stamped himself as an up-and-coming chaser for the future when beating the older and more experienced Lamb Or Cod to land the £11,000 North Devon Hospice Novices’ Chase at Newton Abbot on Monday 8th September.

The four-year-old Ainsi Fideles had shown real promise for trainer David Pipe, winning his last three races and earning a handicap mark of 145, just above that of his rival. He confirmed that good impression when taking the lead at the eighth fence and drawing right away from Lamb Or Cod for an easy 25 lengths win, with the other two runners even more strung out...

Amongst this group will be Rich and Jemma Marsh and Rob and Charlotte Pascoe, all members of Exeter Golf and Country Club. They are taking part to raise money for Rich and Jemma's 3 year old nephew, Henry and have embarked on a tough training programme at Exeter Golf...

Chiefs on the Tigers' tail

Not for the first time in their illustrious history, Leicester Tigers played the role of ‘party poopers’ as they came from behind to sink hosts Exeter Chiefs.

As Devon’s finest opened their doors for the first time since the multi-million pound redevelopment of Sandy Park this summer, it was the boot of England international Freddie Burns that ultimately guided his side to success in Devon.

The summer signing from Gloucester has wasted little time in settling into his new surroundings and his 11-point haul, together with tries from Anthony Allen and Ben Youngs, plus a late...

Exeter City still looking for a win

Match report: Exeter City 1 Oxford 1

Exeter City’s search for a first win of the season continues as they were held to a 1-1 draw at St James Park by Oxford United.

The Grecians got off to the best possible start when Graham Cummins won and converted a penalty in the first few minutes, but the U’s hit back through Callum O’Dowda, who put Joe Riley’s cross beyond stopper Christy Pym.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale made one change to the side which were beaten 2-1 by Mansfield Town at St James Park last time out, as Matt Grimes came into the starting eleven in place...
