Racing stars team up for A Question of Racing on Haldon Gold Cup day

LOVE Devon, the fundraising arm of the charity Devon Communities Together, and Exeter Racecourse have teamed up to create the first A Question of Racing on Haldon Gold Cup Day, Tuesday November 5.

A star-studded panel includes record-breaking Devon born-and-bred female jockeys Bryony Frost and Lizzie Kelly, Philip Hobbs, David Pipe and Joe Tizzard, who rode the winner of the Gold Cup three times. 

They will face questions from the BBC’s David Fitzgerald, including what happened next, home and away questions, the picture board, one-minute round and the buzzer round.

Whilst Exeter Golf and Country Club is no stranger to sporting achievements among staff and members in golf, tennis and squash, the bar has now been raised by swimming instructor, Rebecca Newson.

Rebecca, who started working at Exeter Golf and Country Club this summer, represented Great Britain at the ICF Canoe Ocean World Championships in Quiberon, France on 13th and 14th September 2019.

South Devon’s highly regarded coarse fishing destination, Cofton Holidays, has crowned Jason Morgan from Guildford, Surrey as winner of Cofton Cup IV – The Fishing Competition. 

The multi award-winning holiday park, which is the current holder of the South West Tourism Excellence Awards Holiday Park of the Year title, hosted the competition on its Mamhead Match Lake over 5 days of intensive fishing. The field was narrowed down from 40 in the opening rounds to 15 in the final, with the remainder battling it out for the Plate competition.

The events will take place between autumn 2019 and summer 2020 - and there’s something for everyone, from professional runners, to those putting on their trainers for the first time.

A ladies' skittles team from Exeter narrowly missed top honours at the weekend when they were runners up in the British Skittles Championships.  Two Tribes from Exeter found themselves in the finals for the first time, facing previous champions the Dolly Mixers from Totnes. 

The Dolly Mixers finally triumphed by just ten pins over Two Tribes in a rollercoaster final as each team took it in turns to take the lead.  Final score was 338 – 328.

A reported 5.5% of kids between the ages of five and 10 compete in rugby outside of their schools at least once a month. Exeter Ladies Waterpolo team will represent the city on a national stage this weekend, as they begin their first season in the National Waterpolo league.

And local house building firm Taylor Wimpey and Active Devon have given the team a big helping hand, with sponsorship donations totalling £800 (£500 from Taylor Wimpy, £300 from Active Devon) towards the league fees and expenses.

TV Licensing urges Exeter pubs to avoid a Rugby World Cup penalty

As the Rugby World cup kicks off in Japan, TV Licensing is advising publicans to avoid a penalty and check they are correctly covered by a TV licence if they plan to show live matches.

Due to the time difference, the scrum at the bar will start far earlier than usual this weekend (21-22 September) as rugby fans across the country pack into pubs to watch the home nations live in action.

It is only mid-September and the football season is not even two months old but the manager merry go round is already in full swing. A whole host of managers in the top four tiers of the English game have left their roles and there is a growing sense that the  Exeter City hot seat might be available soon too. If we were Matt Taylor we’d stay put – at least for the time being.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes gave Exeter City a deserved three points with a 2-0 win over Port Vale at St James Park.

Grecians boss Matt Taylor made three changes to the side that was held to a 2-2 draw against Leyton Orient on Saturday; Ben Seymour was rewarded with a start alongside Tom Parkes and Jayden Richardson in a rotation that saw Aaron Martin, Randell Williams and Lee Martin all drop to the bench.
