Exeter Chiefs chairman says new American owners will bring ‘razzmatazz’ to rugby union

Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe believes that the club’s impending takeover by an American consortium could transform the Gallagher Premiership.

The billionaire owners of English Premier League club Bournemouth have agreed a deal for the club, subject to the membership’s approval at an extraordinary general meeting on May 7.

If the deal is ratified, Exeter Chiefs will become the latest Premiership team alongside Newcastle and Bath to secure major new investment.

There was success for Newtown FC at the inaugural men’s Futsal Masters competition last weekend, run by Exeter City FC’s Community Charitable Trust. Twelve teams entered the competition at St Peter’s C of E School in Quarry Lane, Heavitree, with Newtown FC running out 3-1 winners by beating North Tawton FC in the final.

The competition was set up to raise awareness of the benefits of playing Futsal as opposed to traditional five-a-side football and now the Trust are looking for more five-a-side teams to join the first-even men’s futsal league in Exeter, which will be starting on...

Exeter City triumph in korfball derby against Exeter Uni

Saturday 8th December 2012 saw Exeter’s first local korfball match with Exeter City playing Exeter University in the South West Korfball League.

The league includes teams from Taunton, Bristol and Gloucester, but Saturday saw an all-Exeter line up. The clubs first and second teams came together at Wonford sports centre for two back to back matches. The second teams played first and the skill of the City team soon became apparent with a succession of almost answered goals and a lead of 8-1 at half time.

The Uni team fought back strongly to score several quick goals after the...

I am trying to emphasise the importance of keeping a journal with the young athletes I coach. By recording what you are doing, you can measure progress, see what works, see what doesn't work and also change behaviour.

It is well known that people do not realise what is actually going on in their lives. They classically under report how much alcohol they drink, how much food they eat and over report how much exercise they do.

One young player I coach said he didn't play well in a Volleyball match, his legs were tired. When asked what might have caused this, he thought about...

Exeter City Ladies booked their place in the FA Women's Cup second round for the first time with a 7-0 victory over Brislington Ladies.

City dominated the first half but only took a single-goal advantage into the interval. But they came out all guns blazing after the break and eventually ran out comprehensive winners.

Exeter started the brightest and Emma Redwood in particular was steaming forward from the right-back position. After linking up well with Lola Garcia Sanchez, Redwood fired a cross into the path of Tash Knapman but her volley was parried out but Jordan Jones...

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has confirmed that hooker Chris Whitehead is likely to miss the next three months as he looks to cure an on-going neck issue. The 26-year-old forward, who recently penned a new two-year contract with the Aviva Premiership club, is due to undergo surgery later this week. Baxter said: "Chris has a relatively serious injury and is going to have an operation on Tuesday, and he is going to be out for ten to 12 weeks. "Chris has an on-going neck problem, a typical hooker’s problem, a bit of a degenerative issue, which we ultimately have to make a decision on....

Exeter City exorcised the demons of last April by running out 3-2 winners against Rochdale at Spotland.

After an even opening encounter, quick-fire goals by Pat Baldwin and John O’Flynn suddenly put the Grecians in the driving seat. A second before the break for O’Flynn gave Exeter a three-goal cushion at half-time. Terry Gornell netted for the Dale midway through the second period to make things twitchy. Gornell then headed in a second on the stroke of 90 minutes, with the Grecians living dangerously. His afternoon came to an early end though when he was shown a straight red soon...

Chiefs claim maiden Heineken Cup victory over the Scarlets

The European escapades of the Exeter Chiefs hit new heights in Wales as Rob Baxter’s side claimed their maiden Heineken Cup victory against the Scarlets.

Full-time Score: Scarlets: 16 / Chiefs: 22.

Haydn Thomas’ early try, alongside a 17-point haul from fly-half Gareth Steenson, ensured another piece of history for the Devon club, who are clearly relishing dining at the top table with the elite of the European game.

The Scarlets countered with a penalty try and kicks from Rhys Priestland and Aled Thomas, but it was never enough in a hard-fought encounter at the Parc...

Chiefs side to face Scarlets in Heineken Cup

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter believes experiencing the full-on demands of the Heineken Cup is helping develop his squad into a much stronger unit.

Although the Chiefs have suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of European heavyweights Leinster and Clermont Auvergne in their opening two Pool 5 fixtures, Baxter insists the Devon club remain upbeat as they prepare to tackle Welsh region Scarlets on successive weekends in Europe's premier cup competition....

Gareth Steenson wants to use the momentum gained in recent weeks as the ideal springboard for Exeter Chiefs to record their first-ever success in the Heineken Cup this weekend, wriyes Mark Stevens.

Victorious in their last five competitive fixtures, the Devon club head to Wales on Saturday (1.35pm) looking to continue their winning streak against the Scarlets.

With both clubs yet to register a win in Europe’s top cup competition so far this season, the need to get up and running is clearly vital if they are to stand any chance of progressing past Pool 5 rivals Leinster and...

St James’ Park will be hosting the Exeter City Ladies’ FA Women’s Cup first round proper tie against Brislington on Sunday 9th December with kick-off set for 1pm.

This fixture offers the Grecian girls the chance to progress to the second round for the first time in their history.

They reached the first round last season, only to be defeated away at Swindon. But they have been drawn at home to Somerset County Division One side Brislington – and rather than playing at their usual home in Topsham, the Exeter Ladies have the chance to showcase the women’s game at St James’ Park...
