Exeter City are back in League One for the first time since 2012, and they will be looking to impress and even move higher up the pyramid going forward.

The Grecians spent three seasons in the third division last time out, but they will surely set out bigger goals this time around.

Matt Taylor's side have started the new campaign on a decent note, and here is a detailed look at their current squad, transfer businesses they have done and the ones Sports betting have are tipped to do.

Exeter City Summer 2022 Transfers

Outs

The Devon side have released Nigel Atangana, Colin Daniel, Ben Seymour, Jordan Dyer and James Dodd, and they have since joined Eastleigh, Scunthorpe United, Plymouth Parkway, Bath City and Weston-super-Mare, respectively.

George Ray had his Exeter contract terminated by mutual consent and has since joined Barrow.

The trio of Callum Rowe, Ellis Johnson and Jack Veale have also been released but are without clubs at the time of writing.

The quartet of Cameron Dawson, Padraig Amond, Offrande Zanzala and Kieran Phillips have returned to their parent clubs after last season's loan spells at St. James Park.

The trio of Nelson Iseguan, Jack Arthur and Alfie Pond have joined Torquay United, Larkhall Athletic and Yeovil Town on loan, respectively.

Ins

Jamal Blackman has joined on a free after his deal with Huddersfield Town expired, while Kgaogelo Chauke and Rekeem Harper have arrived on season-long loans from Southampton B and Ipswich Town, respectively.

Rumours

With new three solid additions to the squad, Exeter have a team capable of securing safety this season, but it appears there are plans to get in more before the transfer window shuts.

Assistant manager Wayne Carlisle revealed ahead of the weekend's trip to Accrington that "at least one or two more" signings could be arriving in the coming days, and hopefully, that happens.

Squad Profile

2. Jake Caprice

The 29-year-old featured in 33 League Two games last term, has mainly come off the bench this season and is expected to continue to provide cover at the back.

3. Jack Sparkes

The youngster has been a mainstay in Taylor's starting XI and is expected to continue being one going forward.

4. Sam Stubbs

He played 22 league games last term and has featured twice this season,  but he is yet to make himself a regular in the XI.

5. Alex Hartridge

The 23-year-old centre-back started the opening five league games of the season and is expected to feature prominently going forward.

6. Rekeem Harper

The West Bromwich Albion academy graduate has a lot to prove after yet another loan spell.

Given his physicality and technicality, the versatile defensive midfielder should not have any problems impressing in red and white.

7. Matt Jay

The skipper missed just three league games over the last two seasons and remains key in Exeter midfield.

8. Archie Collins

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has remained a regular in the Grecians XI, starting all league games so far this term.

10. Sam Nombe

The 23-year-old has been involved in four goals in six games this term after eight goals and two assists last season.

Can he score enough to keep Exeter up?

12. Josh Key

Key has been a key player on the right wing over the last two seasons at SJP, and has continued to remain important, featuring in all league games so far this term.

14. Tim Dieng

The French attacker bagged 12 goals and assisted thrice last term, and already has a hand in a goal in six league games so far in 2022-23.

15. Kgaogelo Chauke

The Southampton teenage sensation will be hoping to impress at SJP in order to land a permanent place in the Saints' first-team.

All eyes will be on him.

16. Harry Kite

The youngster has featured in every League One game so far this term, but could Harper's arrival change that?

17. Kyle Taylor

The midfielder is yet to see action this season after 10 League Two appearances last term and could struggle for chances.

18. Jamal Blackman

Dawson impressed on loan last season but has returned to Sheffield Wednesday.

He was one of the best goalkeepers in League Two, playing a huge role in Exeter's promotion, and while fans would have been worried about finding a perfect replacement, Blackman is proving to be solid in goal.

19. Sonny Cox

The 17-year-old striker has come off the bench twice this term and could do with another loan spell after a stint with Weston–super–Mare last season.

20. Jevani Brown

The Jamaican forward has three goals and two assists in five League One games so far after ending last term with seven goals and 12 assists.

A crucial member of Taylor's side.

21. Josh Coley

The winger played just six times last term and has only started once this season.

22. Harry Lee

The 17-year-old goalie spent a month on an emergency loan at Dorchester Town last season and could be sent out for something similar this term.

26. Pierce Sweeney

He has captained the side whenever Jay is not named in the starting XI, and he is doing a fine job.

27. Jonathan Grounds

The veteran defender will continue providing quality cover from the bench for Exeter as he did last season.

39. Cheick Diabate

The young defender has started and finished all six League One games so far this term and is poised to play a major role after spending last term away on loan.

40. Scott Brown

The 37-year-old player-goalkeeping coach has been involved in League Cup action so far and could now see little or no action following their elimination from the competition.

Prediction

This current squad should not have any problems staying up, and a mid-table finish looks like the least they can achieve.

A top-six finish could be on the cards, though, and it will be interesting to see how things go.
