Big night for Labour as Exeter sees red

Labour have kept control of Exeter City Council with an increased majority, but it was an Independent win in Heavitree that shared the limelight as the city went to the polls.

Labour gained Topsham from the Conservatives and St Thomas and Pinhoe from Independents, but lost the Newtown and St Leonards seat to the Greens and Heavitree to independent Lucy Haigh.

She had campaigned against the city’s controversial Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme, which has put Heavitree in the headlines in recent months.

Slimmers lose a ton to build new group

Super slimmers in Heavitree, Exeter have lost a whopping 142 stone in weight so far this year – that’s a ton which is the equivalent of four baby elephant.

All together the members of the Heavitree Slimming World group are now 142 stone lighter than they were at the start of the year. Consultant, Lyndsay said that the members have done fantastic and are an inspiration for their determination to make 2015 slimmer for them. New city development sites to be revealed

A plan that says where new development should go in Exeter is about to be published.

The Development Delivery Document has already received a lot of attention during the two previous rounds of consultation undertaken by the City Council.

The comments received have been taken into account to produce the publication document and in July there will again be an opportunity for the local community and others interested to give their views.

From Cornwall to Ethiopia: Medical school link enhances knowledge

Students and staff have returned from the first of a series of six trips to Ethiopia, in a scheme designed to share knowledge and experience.

Four Medical students and two postgraduates were among a team of ten to visit Wollega Medical School. There, the Cornwall-based students had the opportunity to teach their Ethiopian counterparts, as the team worked towards supporting local staff to set up a sustainable learning programme.

The commitment and dedication of volunteers at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised at a special afternoon tea hosted by Chairman James Brent and the Board.

The event was organised as a thank you to all those who regularly give their time to support staff and visitors to the hospital. There are currently over 300 volunteers who give approximately 1,750 hours a month volunteering at the RD&E Hospital and with partner organisations such as ELF, Force and Hospital Radio Exeter.

Man arrested after boy approached in West Hill

Police have arrested a man following an incident in East Devon where a schoolboy was approached by the driver of a van.

At around 8.30am on Wednesday 17 June a 13-year-old boy was approached by a man driving a white van, whilst walking to school, at Tipton Cross, on the Exmouth Road in West Hill.

The driver asked the boy if he wanted a lift and drove in front of him, before the boy ran off.

Unemployment continues to fall in Devon

Numbers of claimants of Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) in Devon continued to fall in May to just 3,720, representing just 0.8% of the county’s working age population, down from 0.9% in the previous month. This is the lowest number of claimants in the County since records began in 1983.

The percentage drop in claimants fell by 6.4% between April and May 2015. This is in comparison to the UK average drop of 4.3% over the same period.

When compared with figures from a year ago, JSA claimants are 30% lower than in May 2014 and nearly 60% lower than in May 2011.

New junction plans for Sandy Park

Residents are being invited to have their say on plans to improve access to Sandy Park in Exeter.

Devon County Council has launched an online consultation on proposals to upgrade the existing ‘left in/left out only’ junction at Sandy Park Way to allow access to lanes in both directions on the A379.

Plans for the new junction, which will be traffic light controlled, include widening Sandy Park Way and the A379 inbound carriageway, and constructing a right turn lane on the A379 outbound carriageway for Sandy Park Way.

Showjumping action delights at Bicton

Bicton Arena's six day show, the largest ever competition staged at the venue, has been hailed a huge success by riders who travelled from across the UK to compete in a range of showjumping classes from novice to Grand Prix.

The start of the sixth annual national street ping pong festival is upon us and once more, Exeter gets in on the action with a spectacular launch at the city’s Princesshay Shopping Centre this Friday 19th June.

Centre stage will be the true stars of the show – 10 full sized table tennis tables located right at the heart of Exeter’s busy shopping district.

The tables will be there for anyone to play on in ‘Random Acts of Ping Pong’, but the tables will also play host to master classes from local and national tennis table stars throughout the day on Friday.
