New chapter for Devon's libraries

Devon’s libraries are to be run by a new organisation owned by staff and the community.

Council chiefs today agreed that Libraries Unlimited, the new ‘public service mutual’ set up by the Council, will take over the library service in April 2016.

The move is set to secure the future of all 50 of the County’s libraries and save the authority a further £1.5 million in addition to the £3 million it has already saved from its library service budget over the past three years.

Flybe today announced revenue growth, up £31.8 million to £339.6m.

The Exeter-based firm made a £22.9m profit after reporting a £3.3m loss a year ago.

The company said it had completed the first three chapters of its four part transformation: relaunching the business witht a stronger balance sheet, modernising its brand and handling its major legacy issues while returning to growth. It is now focused on profitable growth.

Exeter student Paige Furzer had a lovely surprise when she started volunteering for us here at Hospiscare.

She discovered her Great Nan was the first patient at Hospiscare’s Exeter hospice and even met the Duchess of Kent who opened the hospice in 1992.

Paige, 19, who is studying journalism at Exeter College, said: “It’s a quite amazing coincidence. I’m thrilled to be helping the charity which provided so much support and comfort to my Great Nan and our family.

Intensive farming link to Bovine TB

Intensive farming practices such as larger herd size, maize growth, fewer hedgerows and the use of silage have been linked to higher risk of bovine TB, new research has concluded.

A study by the University of Exeter, funded by BBSRC and published in the Royal Society journal Biological Letters, analysed data from 503 farms which have suffered a TB breakdown alongside 808 control farms in areas of high TB risk.

Tesco will significantly improve the support it offers war veterans and reservists, the retailer announced today.

Tesco has a proud record of supporting the Armed Forces dating right back to founder Jack Cohen, who set Tesco up with his demob money after serving in the First World War. Devon County Council is urging the Transport Secretary and Devon MPs to back a bill to help end the blight of parking on pavements.

The Pavement Parking (Protection of Vulnerable Pedestrians) Bill is scheduled for its second reading in the House of Commons on Friday 4 December.

Supporters of the Exeter Chiefs can do their bit to boost the funds of the Exeter Foundation with a new initiative launched by the club.

We know there are occasions where season ticket holders, Gold Card and 1905 members are unable to attend a match-day game at Sandy Park.
