Nello cyclists have special reasons for taking part

FORCE Cancer Charity’s largest annual fundraiser – The Nello bike ride – is less than two months away and cyclists from across Devon and around the country are gearing up for the big day on Sunday June 28.

Since the first Nello Century Cycle Challenge in 2000, the ride has raised £1.5million for Exeter-based FORCE, which works locally to support anyone affected by cancer, face-to-face and close to home.

The charity has set a target of raising £127,500 from Nello 2026 to meet the increasing demand for its unique services.

Exeter revealed as UK city with highest debt levels

Despite being named by the Sunday Times as one of the top 10 most desirable cities to live in the UK, people living in Exeter owe an average of more than £20,000 each - according to a national free debt advice provider. Compiling a list of the top 10 UK cities with the highest debts, PayPlan found that people living in Exeter are saddled with debts of £20,375 from credit cards and loans – significantly more than the national average of £13,000, reported in recent figures revealed by the TUC. Unit 1 supports RD&E’s children’s Ward with £2,000 donation

The generosity of customers at Exeter’s Unit 1 Night Club has helped to fund a brand new blood pressure machine for the Paediatric Outpatients Department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

The club has raised almost £2,000 for the unit on Bramble Ward through the Echo Trust’s ‘Give a Kid a Quid’ campaign at key events and club nights throughout the year.

Devon MP suspended for using racist expression

The MP for Newton Abbot has been suspended from the Conservative Party after she was recorded using a racist expression during a public discussion.

Anne Marie Morris used the phrase when describing the prospect of the UK leaving the EU without a deal at an event in London.

She told the BBC: "The comment was totally unintentional. I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused."

The Conservative Party later confirmed she had been suspended.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "shocked" by the "completely unacceptable" language.

Robby gears up for tuk-tuk charity challenge

The owner of a Chinese restaurant in Cullompton is planning a John O’Groats to Land’s End challenge with a difference – he’s doing it in a tuk-tuk.

Robby Ho from the China Orchids aims to drive Ruby the three-wheeled auto rickshaw on an 856-mile route from the North of Scotland to the tip of Cornwall in just five days.

He’ll set out on Monday August 7 with co drivers and support crew Russell Phillips and Shaun Hellier.

They hope to raise £3,000 to be shared between Exeter based FORCE Cancer Charity, Hospice UK and the Cullompton Swimming Pool Campaign.

Lottery funding to benefit disabled visitors to Seaton Wetlands

Thanks to money raised by the National Lottery, Seaton Wetlands, Seaton Tram and Seaton Jurassic will become more accessible to disabled visitors.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £527,000 to the Heritage Ability scheme which, over the next three years, will be working with sites across the UK, including eight places in Devon, to make them more accessible.

Some of Devon's best-loved characters came together last week (05 July) at Ladram Bay Holiday Park to celebrate the start of the high-summer holiday season. Ottery shoppers help Devon’s beavers

East Devon shoppers have been doing their bit for the River Otter beavers through a local store’s fundraising scheme.

Staff at Roberts, Ottery St Mary’s venerable hardware and homeware shop, set up a ‘book and DVD’ stall in the store, with each item available for a £1 donation. Woman and child among three dead in A38 crash

Three people died and nine people were left injured in a serious multiple vehicle collision on the A38 near Landrake yesterday morning [Sunday 9 July].

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called at 11.15am following the collision involving five cars between Tideford and Landrake.
