Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Volunteers muck in and clean up Exe Estuary

Almost 150 volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to clean-up the Exe Estuary -- and the good news is that the amount of discarded rubbish blighting the beauty spot is on the decrease.

The usual assortment of rubbish including lumps of concrete, car tyres and broken glass was found during the 20th clean-up of the internationally important Exmouth Local Nature Reserve over the weekend. Recyclable plastic makes up over 60 per cent of everything found on beach cleans. However this time volunteers only found enough rubbish to fill half a skip, less than during previous clean-ups....

Business Promotion Grant awarded to Devon businesses

Funding has been awarded to ten Devon businesses to help them promote their goods and services to potential new customers.

The Business Promotion Grant, from Devon County Council, is designed to help local companies to cover exhibiting costs at high profile trade shows or events. Grants of up to £1,000 were offered through a competitive bidding process. Reverend Jonathan Greener appointed Dean of Exeter Cathedral

The 71st Dean of Exeter Cathedral is to be the Very Reverend Jonathan Greener, currently the Dean of Wakefield Cathedral in the Diocese of Leeds, Downing Street has announced today.

Jonathan will take up his new role at the end of November, on the Sunday before Advent.

He succeeds the Very Rev Jonathan Draper, who resigned at the end of August.

As Dean of Wakefield, Jonathan carried out the most complete makeover of any Cathedral in recent times, raising £7.5 million and completely transforming the interior, which had been untouched since the 1870s.

You’re never too old to ‘hop up top’ with the ‘Golden Hop’

Stagecoach has announced the last day of the ‘Golden Hop’ open top service will be 28 October, the end of autumn half term week. After this date, it will cease for the winter before returning in spring 2018.

Since launching in April, the service has established itself as a popular addition to the Bay’s tourism offering. Exeter school fines students for graffiti

A group of students have been fined by a language school after they spray-painted graffiti on buildings in Exeter. The students were each fined £75 by the Globe English School in St David’s Hill, Exeter, after they defaced parts of the Quay.

Exeter City Council, who were called in to remove the graffiti, said the money - £1,125 in total – would go towards the cost of chemicals used to remove graffiti in the city. Cllr Stephen Brimble, Lead Councillor for Place, said he was delighted with the School’s initiative to fine 15 of their students.

The thousands of trees at the University of Exeter remove pollution equivalent to emissions from 798 family cars from the atmosphere every year, research shows.

New calculations show the 5,000 trees surveyed, from 328 species and six continents, capture 36 tonnes of carbon annually. They also stop 4,217 m³ a year of water – two Olympic swimming pools – from flooding local rivers and remove two tonnes of pollutants from the air.
