Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Three generations take on Santa Run for Exeter Deaf Academy

On Sunday 3 December, Exeter Deaf Academy student Sam Harris will take on the city’s Santa Run to raise money for his school with THREE generations of his family running alongside him.

12 year-old Sam will be joined by his 3 year-old stepsister Alex, his father and stepmother, and his grandparents Jane (64) and Ted (74). Sam’s father Robert said;

Wronged pensioners call on PM and Pensions Minister for change in law

A group of pensioners who have been left severely out of pocket because of a legal loophole are calling on the Prime Minister and Pensions Minister for a change in the law.

It follows a rallying event at the House of Commons last week attended by representatives of the Hewlett Packard Pensions Group and MPs and their representatives from 14 different constituencies across the UK - including John Redwood MP, Bill Grant MP, Matt Rodda MP and Sir Hugo Swire MP.

People whose lives have been affected by dementia have worked with well-known professional artists to create insightful images and poems that capture some of their experiences, to form a new book.

The project involved people with dementia and their partners who are part of Age UK Exeter’s Budding Friends project and who spend time together on the charity’s allotment or at a local art studio. Concern at increase in repossession actions

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has raised concerns about an overall 3.8% increase in the number of housing repossession cases listed at Exeter County Court in the six-month period ending 30th September. This is in comparison to the same period in 2016.

Steve Barriball, Citizens Advice Exeter Chief Executive, said: “In the last six-months there were 296 cases listed for repossession, an overall 3.8% increase, or 11 cases, on the previous year. However, there was a small reduction in mortgage repossessions, which were down by four cases.

Police are appealing to the public after a burglary in Springfield Road, Exmouth.

Daytime road closures planned on Teign Valley Road

Work to stabilise the embankment on parts of the Teign Valley Road will require further daytime road closures over the next fortnight.

A series of road closures on the stretch of the B3193 south of the Teign Valley Golf Club will be needed on Wednesday (1 November), Thursday (2 November), Friday (3 November) and Monday 6 November. Medals belonging to two brothers were kept together after a buyer successfully bid on two separate lots.

One of the brothers, Private Albert Crockford, sadly died in July 2016, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was awarded three medals: the 1914-15 Star, the British War medal and the Victory medal.

Albert’s brother, Lieutenant Corporal J Crockford then received his call up papers, but unlike his brother he survived the war and received the Military medal, 1914-15 Star, British War medal, 1914-1920, and Victory medal.

Devon builds for bees

The winners of the ‘Build for Bees’ competition, which encouraged Devon’s residents to build the biggest and best bug hotels for pollinators, have been decided.

There was heavy competition, with lots of creative and well-designed entries submitted from schools, community groups, individuals and families.
