Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Updated plans for a footbridge to replace Alma Bridge in Sidmouth will be presented to local town councillors on Monday (6 November).

Devon County Council had put forward proposals for a structure over the River Sid which included short flights of steps at either end of the bridge. Everlasting honour for city's wartime defenders

Members of the Polish ‘307’ nightfighter squadron which defended Exeter during the Second World War will be honoured with a plaque in Exeter Cathedral this month, as the city marks the 75th anniversary of the Exeter Blitz. Hundreds of trick or treaters enjoyed free hot choccie, sweets and homemade cakes at the Beacon Heath home of the lovely McHutchon family.

University level students at ‘Gold’ rated Exeter College celebrated their graduation in the spectacular surroundings of Exeter Cathedral.

More than 165 students from the Centre for University Level Studies donned their caps and gowns for a grand procession through the city centre on their way to the Cathedral (Friday, October 20th).

This year’s graduation comes after a year of success for University Level studies at Exeter College – with the college awarded a prestigious ‘Gold’ rating in the UK Government’s assessment of teaching excellence in higher education.

Overnight closures at Sandygate roundabout for resurfacing

Overnight closures will be needed on Sandygate roundabout and the services roundabout at Junction 30 of the M5 for two weeks while essential resurfacing work is carried out.

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed overnight on Thursday (2 November).

The road will be closed from 8.30pm in order to enable surfacing work to be carried out and for the last sections of guardrail to be installed. It will re-open at 5.30am the following morning (Friday 3 November). The diversion route will be signed via Topsham Road, Alphington Road, Marsh Barton and the A379. Probation Service officer up for national award

A probation service officer from Exeter has been shortlisted for a major national award.

Laura Greenhill, 47, has been shortlisted for a Butler Trust Award, which recognises and celebrates outstanding dedication, skill and creativity by people working in prisons, probation and youth justice settings across the UK.

The recognition is a result of Laura’s hard work to deliver and develop probation work at the city’s recently refurbished CoLab community and wellbeing hub at Wat Tyler House in King William Street.

Kennel owner fined after dog escaped and was killed by another dog

A kennel owner has been prosecuted by East Devon District Council and ordered to pay fines and costs of more than £4,000 after a dog staying at the kennels escaped from its pen and was killed by another dog.

Paul Sparks, the owner of Barn Close Kennels in Combe Raleigh, Honiton, pleaded guilty to five offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Animal Boarding Establishments Act and was sentenced by Exeter Magistrates on Monday October 30. Barn Close Kennels is licensed as an Animal Boarding Establishment by East Devon District Council.
