A theatre company formed by five graduates from Birmingham School of Acting has been nominated for the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) 2017 Edinburgh Award. In 2016, the Birmingham students created Theatre63 – which now boasts a strong collective of eight alumni – and they all continue to strive to complete their original and ultimate goal of performing 63 shows. Citizens Advice Exeter welcomes Taylor Review with reservations

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, says that the recent Matthew Taylor review of modern employment practices includes many proposals which would help people currently at the sharp end of insecure work but says that enhanced rights and protections will require more effective enforcement.

The review report was published last month.

In the last year the charity has helped people with 1,074 enquiries about issues they were having at work. The main issues being:

Kidney patients praise freedom and flexibility of home dialysis

The freedom and flexibility brought by home dialysis treatments has been praised by patients during a series of information events run by kidney specialists at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital this July.

Commuters could help cut congestion in Exeter

City commuters could play a pivotal role in helping curb traffic congestion in and around Exeter, thanks to a pioneering initiative.

Researchers from the University of Exeter are seeking volunteers to be the driving force behind the latest scheme to try and encourage people to leave their vehicles at home and use sustainable transport.

People living in Exeter wanting to vote in the next election are being urged to complete a form that has been posted to their homes.

Exeter City Council is carrying out its annual voter registration canvas and people are being urged to check if their information on the electoral register is correct.

The aim of the canvass is to ensure that the electoral register is up-to-date and to identify any residents who are not on it.

Archaeologists unearth remains to prove theory of lost Exeter mansion

Archaeologists have uncovered remains of a large building on the National Trust’s Killerton estate.

This significant find supports the theory that these are the remains of Killerton’s lost house; a grand mansion designed by renowned architect James Wyatt, the location of which has been lost for 240 years. Rumours about the lost mansion have persisted for many years, but no-one has been able to find where the building was located. Nominate projects to receive £1,000 Community Fund

RGB Building Supplies has reopened its Well Built Community Fund and is calling out to schools, charities and community groups to tell it about projects that have an autumnal theme for the chance to receive £1,000 worth of building materials.

This will be the builders’ merchants’ 20th Community Fund giveaway and whatever the reason for the nomination, RGB would like to hear about it. Maybe a charity needs to make repairs to ensure a building is safe for winter, or perhaps an amateur dramatic group needs help with staging for an autumn performance.

Child arrests in Devon and Cornwall fall by 76% in six years

Arrests of children by Devon and Cornwall Police have fallen by 76 per cent in the last six years, figures published by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today (Monday 7 August).

Research by the charity has found that the force made 994 arrests of children aged 17 and under last year, down from 4,132 in 2010.

Across England and Wales, the total number of arrests has fallen by 64 per cent in six years – from almost 250,000 in 2010 to 87,525 in 2016.

Around 500 people visited the Honiton Community Festival where many local community groups held stalls and attractions.

A number of demonstrations were held throughout the day at the event which was held at Allhallows Playing Field.

These included displays by SYTL Karate, which included a very useful Stranger Danger message, the SPS Kickboxing group who showed off their skills, the lively Honiton Twirlstars who put on a great performance and musicians from the Honiton Youth Orchestra provided some great music for the event.
