Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in South West

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Torquay, Plymouth and Exmouth branches this February, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. Appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

Hundreds of pieces of plastic reclaimed during inaugural unwrap

Plastic Free Exeter held their inaugural plastic unwrap on Saturday 2 June.

Part of the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities movement, the unwrap was the third event run by Exeter’s group since they launched in January 2018.

Exmouth watersports centre given green light

Queen’s Drive in Exmouth including associated facilities for water sports users such as a café, restaurant and retail spaces as well as associated car parking.

Members of East Devon District Council’s Development Management Committee have voted in favour of granting planning permission for the construction of a new water sports centre and facilities for water sports users such as a café, restaurant, retail spaces and car parking at Queen’s Drive in Exmouth.

The Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June.

Visitors can:

Take the opportunity to walk through the nearly restored graveyard and browse through the range of information on the histories of the Graveyard, of Dissent, of the monuments and the people associated with site.

Tour of Britain Stage 2 marked by historic race through Victorian market

World class cyclists will race through the South Molton Pannier Market in September – the first time in the history of the modern Tour of Britain that it is has been routed through a building.

Stage 2 of the race will take place on Monday September 3, starting in the UK’s newest town, Cranbrook, in East Devon and finishing in Barnstaple, North Devon.

The route was announced at the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain national launch in central London on Tuesday evening (5 June).

County Council unwraps new strategy to reduce plastic waste

Devon County Council has pledged to phase out its use of the most polluting single-use plastic products within two years.

The move is part of a new action plan the Council has developed to help cut the amount of single-use plastic waste in Devon.

The ‘Plastics Strategy’ outlines how various single-use plastic food and beverage packaging and tableware (such as cutlery and cups) will be removed from Council work locations by 2020.

Motorists with cars in need of some TLC are being encouraged to visit Honiton Gymnastics Club on Saturday 9 June, when the community group’s supporters will be hand-washing cars to raise money for new equipment. Cartoonist Tony Husband has created a 9ft mural for residents at RMBI Home Cadogan Court in Exeter. Well known for his cartoons in newspapers and magazines including Private Eye, Punch and The Times, Tony visited the Home on Thursday 10 May with dementia activist Gina Awad who supported the event. He spent the day drawing different focal points with the help of residents, which he later created into a large mural in the Home’s reception. Exeter’s Wyvern Barracks is trying to trace a lady who contacted the base with concerns about buying her ticket for its upcoming open-air concerts – because the Commanding Officer now wants to invite her to attend as his VIP guest.

The lady, who did not leave her details, rang the Barracks a few weeks ago to say she wanted to go to one of the ‘100 Years Behind the Red Brick Wall’ events in early July, but did not feel happy about buying a ticket online through the Eventbrite website.

Two emergency calls an hour about dogs in hot cars during recent heatwave

The RSPCA received more than 300 calls - that’s two calls an hour - last week, during a mini heatwave which swept across England & Wales.

The animal welfare charity received 317 reports of animals in hot environments, the majority of which were dogs that had been left in hot cars, from Monday 28 May to Sunday 3 June - when temperatures hit the mid 20s. Advice is that people should contact the police on 999 if they see a dog in distress in a hot car but on average more than two calls an hour were still made to the charity.
