Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in South West

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Torquay, Plymouth and Exmouth branches this February, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. Appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

A number of striking Silhouettes have appeared around Exeter to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

A Devon community healthcare champion and an Exeter clinical scientist who has helped to transform the lives of thousands of patients worldwide have been recognised by the Queen in her latest Birthday Honours.

Professor Sian Ellard, the RD&E’s Consultant Clinical Scientist and Professor of Genomic Medicine at the University of Exeter, receives an OBE, while Steve Hudson, the RD&E’s former Divisional Director of Community Services at the RD&E, receives an MBE.

Tireless Exeter demetia activist Gina Awad has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in The Queen’s Birthday Honours.

A wildlife charity is inviting the local people of Exeter to go wild and celebrate nature at a family fun day in one of Exeter’s best-known Valley Parks: Mincinglake.

The event marks day 16 in Devon Wildlife Trusts’ month long 30 Days Wild challenge; in which members of the public pledge to complete a ‘random act of wildness’ each day, during the month of June.

With guided wildlife walks, wild crafts, bug hunting, and other wild activities on offer, the charity hopes to re-energise participants and inspire more people to take part.

Pay and conserve at National Park car parks

Dartmoor National Park has now installed pay and conserve parking metres at its car parks at Haytor (upper and lower car parks) Postbridge and Meldon Reservoir.

The context for introducing the new pay and conserve scheme follows a 40% reduction in National Park funding since 2011, making the maintenance of car parks and other visitor facilities in the National Park a significant financial challenge. A voluntary parking donation scheme set up in these carparks, which it was hoped would raise income, proved unsustainable as donations were as low as 15 pence per vehicle.
