Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Work complete on first phase of new junction east of Tiverton

The first phase of work on a new £5.7 million junction off the A361 near Tiverton has been completed.

The junction is the first element of new infrastructure links to developments planned for the east of Tiverton. The initial project has been finished on time and on budget, enabling both lanes of the North Devon Link Road to re-open.

The infrastructure in place so far will enable the rest of the highway network in the area to be constructed, unlocking the development of homes, a primary school and employment land earmarked in Mid Devon’s Local Plan.

Don’t lose your chance to vote

Local residents are being warned not to lose their voice on matters that affect them by completing their annual canvass form and returning it to the City Council as soon as possible.

With City Council elections taking place in May 2019, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.

The form ensures that the Council can keep the electoral register up-to-date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be added to the register. Doing so will allow people to take part in any future elections.

New research from the RNLI reveals nearly all young men aged 16-35 (98%) would share advice with their male friends, but less than half (41%) have offered advice about safety issues.

Meanwhile, coastal fatality figures released by the RNLI reveal of the 109 people who died at the UK coast in 2017, 91% of them were men.

Ten of the very best farm food producers in the South West walked away with 22 of the top awards at the National Trust’s annual Fine Farm Produce Awards, presented at BBC Countryfile Live at Blenheim Palace.

Now in their thirteenth year, the awards celebrate the finest produce from the Trust’s 1,500 tenant farmers and estates, who between them look after more than 500,000 acres of farmland in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. New Exeter skate park designs revealed

Exciting new designs have been revealed for a new skate park in Exeter. The new facility at Arena Park is to be built in September and is expected to be finished before Christmas. The design of the park has been chosen by a group of local pro skaters working to a design brief heavily influenced by the local skating community. A new initiative launches today, giving Exeter’s emerging artists and designers a unique opportunity to take over a large window space on Paris Street. Rarely seen portraits of influential Devon women, including Nancy Astor, Eleanor Acland and Gertrude Acland, are on show at Killerton. The portraits are visiting as part of a touring exhibition, ‘Faces of Change: Votes for Women’, a partnership between the National Trust and the National Portrait Gallery. Devon County Council has been named the winner of the Best Overall Report at the PATROL PARC Awards (Parking Annual Report Awards by Councils).

The Donkey Sanctuary’s stolen tractor is recovered in Ireland

A tractor stolen from the Sidmouth headquarters of the international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary, has been recovered by the Garda in Ireland. The John Deere 6220 Loader Tractor was stolen from the charity’s Trow Farm in Sidmouth in November 2017. The vehicle has since been professionally cloned into a 6320 model to try and disguise its identity. The Donkey Sanctuary relies on its tractors to transport the donkeys’ feed and bedding, particularly over the harsh winter months.
