Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in South West

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Torquay, Plymouth and Exmouth branches this February, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Too many people being let down, says Citizens Advice Exeter

Leading local advice charity Citizens Advice Exeter, has today released its annual advice trend statistics for the year ending 31st March 2018.

The charity has helped 10306 people directly with advice and information last year. The overall advice trends, compared to the previous year, were as follows:

Welfare benefits Overall, the charity saw a 13.5% increase in welfare benefit enquiries. The main changes being:

Intriguing graffiti appears on the wall of Exeter military base

A graffiti artist has been at work in an unexpected place - the high red-brick wall surrounding Exeter's Wyvern Barracks.

The graffiti has appeared on the otherwise featureless wall along Topsham Road, near the main gates.

But this isn't an attack of hostile vandalism on the important military base. The graffiti artist, Max Nettleton from Exeter College, was invited by the Barracks' Commanding Officer to decorate the wall using removeable paint, to publicise the big event taking place there at the beginning of July, ‘100 Years Behind the Red Brick Wall'.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau have reported a 7 per cent increase in the number of fraud offences recorded in England and Wales, compared to the previous year.

That’s more than 660,000 reports made to the intelligence bureau. But experts estimate that only 5 to 15 percent of all scams are reported, so the true number of fraud offences is likely to be considerably higher. The National Trust has developed a series of British Sign Language videos (BSL) to give the Deaf community better access to the history of Killerton House and the Acland family that once lived there. The videos take visitors on a journey around the home, explaining key Acland figures and the history behind each room. The BSL videos have been created and presented by a Deaf volunteer from Heritage Ability. Princesshay to host Wimbledon Big Screen

Live outdoor screenings of Wimbledon matches on a giant screen will take place in Princesshay Square for the duration of the legendary two-week tournament (Monday 2nd July – Sunday 15th July).

Princesshay will also provide deckchairs, bean bags and a temporary lawn for visitors to enjoy while watching the matches free of charge.

Warning to motorists parking near Exeter Canal

People are being warned not to park their cars beside an access road to a popular canal-side pub in Exeter. Signs are due to go up on Tuesday (19 June) along the road between Salmonpool Bridge and the Double Locks pub. The City Council said a number of motorists were regularly parking at the side of the road, causing problems for passing vehicles and damaging the banks of the canal and the footpath. The awards ceremony for the Outstanding Care Awards for Devon and Cornwall has celebrated local heroes in the caring sector.

Carers, Rowcroft Hospice and Ocean Healthcare were amongst employees, volunteers and care organisations from across the region celebrated at the awards.

The ceremony saw more than 300 people attend the sold out event at the Livermead Hotel in Torquay.
