Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in South West

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Torquay, Plymouth and Exmouth branches this February, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. Appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

Overnight closure planned on Bridge Road in Exeter

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed overnight on Thursday 28 February The road will be closed for one night, from 8.30pm to 5.30am, while minor remedial work is carried out.

The closure, from Countess Wear roundabout to Matford roundabout, will enable maintenance to be carried out to the Swing Bridge. Small areas of pavements will also be resurfaced and high friction surfacing will be applied to manhole covers.

The diversion route will be signed via Topsham Road, Exe Bridges, Alphington Road, Marsh Barton and the A379.

Wellbeing Exeter is a partnership of public, voluntary and community sector organisations who have come together to explore better ways of supporting the 40% of patients who visit their GP with socially based rather than medical problems.

Resurfacing work planned in Bradninch

Essential resurfacing work will be carried out in the centre of Bradninch from the end of February.

A number of roads will be closed throughout the scheme, which is expected to take around five weeks.

From Monday 25 February until Friday 15 March, preparatory work will get underway in Millway and then followed by Fore Street.

The main work in the scheme will be carried out from Monday 18 March, again starting in Millway, and then moving on to High Street, Fore Street, and then part of Cullompton Hill.

Have your say on new play park equipment for Pinhoe

People are being invited to have their say on exciting new plans to upgrade play equipment at Pinhoe Station Road.

A consultation open day is being held this Friday (22 February), from 11am until 3pm at Pinhoe Station Road changing rooms.

Everyone is welcome to attend and give their views on the proposals.

Plans for the Play Area include new swings, roundabouts, slides and other equipment, as well as new seating and bike racks.

Play equipment provider Wicksteed will be carrying out the consultation.

Local Devon based Artist Becky Bettesworth was absolutely thrilled when the Community Services Team at the Albany Clinic in Newton Abbot asked her to donate one of her prints for their newly redecorated kitchen.

Becky said “It was an absolute pleasure to be asked to open the newly decorated kitchen facilities for the Community Services Team. Exeter researcher awarded Pew Fellowship to discover if commercial fishing harms endangered penguin populations

Experts will work to discover if commercial fishing is harming endangered African penguins by making it harder to forage for food in the ocean.

Dr Richard Sherley from the University of Exeter will use GPS tracking and other technology to follow penguins in South Africa to record how deep they have to dive and how far they have to travel to find fish.

Penguins eat sardines and anchovies, which are also fished commercially, and the study will help researchers better understand the cost of this to penguin populations. The study could lead to solutions for more sustainable...
