Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Redrow National Apprentice of the Year Courtney Baker-Edwards joined forces with Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team to volunteer her painting and decorating support in their latest Big Build in Torquay.

Aired on Thursday 23rd May and now available to watch on BBC iPlayer, the episode showed the team helping single dad Stuart, who has suffered with progressive multiple sclerosis since his 15-year-old daughter Lauren was born, and his mum and primary carer Grandma Lin who has been blind since her 20s.

Bus Users UK will be by the Princesshay Shopping Centre on Bedford Street at 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 12 June to hear what local people have to say about their bus services.

Bus Users UK, the charity that aims to bring people together through socially inclusive transport, will be joined by representatives from Devon County Council and Stagecoach South West.

Passengers and local residents can pop in and raise their concerns or suggestions directly with the people responsible for running their bus services.

Exeter environmentally friendly housing complex wins design award

An environmentally-friendly housing complex has scooped a top design award.

Exeter City Council’s Chester Long Court – 26 high-quality affordable homes in Whipton, Exeter, has won the Design through Innovation Award at the Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards (South West).

As a regional winner, the complex in Vaughan Road will now go through to the National finals in London later in the year.

Chester Long Court first opened its doors to tenants on the City Council’s waiting list at the end of 2018.

Devon County Council is working with Love to Ride Devon to support Bike Week and the cycle challenge throughout next month.

Exeter scientist wins world’s biggest science communication competition

A University of Exeter scientist has won FameLab International, a global competition to find the best new science communicators.

Marine biologist Tim Gordon progressed through preliminary rounds and regional finals earlier this year, before winning the UK final of FameLab at the Cheltenham Science Festival on Monday. Judge Dr Vivienne Parry OBE described his presentation as “authentic, honest and absolutely passionate about his subject”, and he was awarded £3,000 as the national champion.

A leading climate scientist has been appointed MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Richard Betts , of the Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of Exeter, has been recognised for “services to understanding climate change”.
