Middlemoor roundabout traffic signals will take time to repair

Devon County Council is urging motorists to take extra care at Middlemoor roundabout while traffic signals at the junction remain out of action.

The traffic lights were damaged by a car which struck the controller unit of the system at the start of the Christmas period.

The County Council is doing everything it can to resolve the issue, but bespoke parts need to be made to get it back up and running, which will take some time. Work will start on site next week (w/c Monday 19 January) while a new “16-phase controller unit” is currently being built off-site by a specialist...

Jewellery taken in Honiton burglary

Police are appealing for information after items of jewellery were stolen from a house in Hale Lane, Honiton.

Offenders forced a ground floor window to get inside the property sometime between 10am and 1.35pm on Friday 31 May.

Numerous items of jewellery were taken from the property including a silver Pandora necklace with diamonds, a silver Armani watch, a gold cross diamond necklace, a silver link bracelet, a black and white diamond necklace and a gold and silver ladies watch.

Relatives of D-Day veterans enjoyed a party to celebrate the launch of a new book which tells the individual stories of those who took part.

D-Day Spearhead Brigade has been written by author Christopher Jary - who is also a Trustee at the Keep Museum in Dorchester - the museum of the Devonshire and Dorset regiments.

One of the UK’s most threatened butterflies, the Marsh Fritillary, has recently been found at a National Trust site at Brownsham, near Hartland in North Devon. Brownsham is home to one of Britain’s rarest grassland habitats, culm grassland, which is one of the butterfly’s preferred habitats.

Residents at RMBI Home Cadogan Court in Exeter began their new weekly fitness regime this week, pumping iron at a local gym.

Four game individuals, aged between 81 and 98, became the first care home residents to try out Motortone, a new gym specially designed for older adults, which is part of Exeter Sports Academy.

Honeybee mite raises bumblebee virus risk

A mite that spreads a dangerous virus among honeybees also plays an indirect role in infecting wild bumblebees, new research shows.

The Varroa destructor mite lives on honeybees and can spread deformed wing virus (DWV) throughout the hive.

The mite has emerged as a parasite of Western honeybees, after switching from its original host, the Asian honeybee at the beginning of the last century. It has since spread globally through the man-made movement of infested honeybee hives and has turned into a viral vector.
