The festive season is a special time of year when many people come together with family and friends to celebrate.

At Hospiscare, we know that for those adjusting to life without a loved one, it can be a bittersweet time.

Light Up a Life is our annual celebration of the lives of lost loved ones. We hope you will join us for this in-person service at Exeter Cathedral for hand-picked readings, poems, music and carols in honour and remembrance of all those people we hold dear.

Exeter staff help the environment by reusing hundreds of unwanted items

A platform that has encouraged hundreds of University of Exeter staff members to reuse unwanted items in order to help the environment is celebrating its first anniversary.

The Waste Action Reuse Portal (WARPit) is an online reuse platform that makes it easy for staff to get, give and loan surplus assets across the university.

It focuses on the sustainability of the university’s waste management and enables the university to make the most of its resources by encouraging staff to swap items between themselves, rather than send them to landfill or recycling.

Two close-knit ‘lovedogs’ are looking for a forever home, after warming the hearts of a local community on their journey back to full health at a pet rescue centre in Doncaster.

Abandoned, cold, starving and frightened, the two lurchers, Samir and Sabiha, who are thought to be between three and five years old, were taken in by Tia Rescue in January after being found by a local dog warden, stranded in a nearby field.

Brave Rhiannon raises a huge £10,000 for RD&E’s Spinal Unit

An incredibly brave 11-year-old girl has raised an impressive £10,000 for the RD&E Spinal Unit, just two years after undergoing major spinal surgery.

At just six-years-old Rhiannon Hewitt, from Camelford, Cornwall, was doing handstands with her sister when her grandmother noticed that Rhiannon’s back looked out of shape. An x-ray found that Rhiannon was suffering with a 60 degree curve of the spine, known as Scoliosis. From then on, to try and reduce the risk of the curve increasing, Rhiannon wore a brace for three years, 23 hours a day.

Paramedics at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) are reminding people to use the service wisely this August bank holiday as the ambulance service is expected to be very busy.

The Trust is expecting more than 10,690 incidents over the bank holiday four-day weekend, and with the sunny weather predicted the ambulance service will be kept busy with visitors to the region.

A University of Exeter student is already making a big impact in the film industry as the UK’s youngest feature film director, with an acclaimed film critic labelling him as “the next Steven Spielberg.”

Exmouth's £12 million tidal defence scheme continues to make good progress

Construction of the new £12 million tidal defence scheme at Exmouth is on track to significantly reduce flooding to 1,800 properties in the Devon town.

In September there will be more activity along the sea front as work increases on The Esplanade. For some of the work to proceed the road will need to be closed in sections between The Grove, along Morton Crescent, Alexandra Terrace Junction and past the Clock Tower up to the Premier Inn.

The matriarch of Paignton Zoo died at the age of 49. Born in 1970, she came to Paignton Zoo in 1977 and for many years lived with female Asian elephant Gay. Duchess collapsed in her enclosure on Sunday 14th July and had to be put to sleep.

Residents invited to find out more ahead of new Dawlish sea wall work restarting

Residents are invited to a drop-in session in Dawlish, Devon, to update them ahead of work restarting on the new sea wall which will help protect the town and the railway from extreme weather and rising sea levels for generations to come.

Network Rail will restart work on 9 September on the new bigger sea wall which will provide greater resilience for the stretch of railway that connects the South West with the rest of the country.

Work had stopped during the peak summer tourism season to minimise the impact on local communities and businesses.
