Exeter Cathedral to Host City’s Largest Volunteer Fair

Exeter Community Initiatives is delighted to announce the return of the Exeter Volunteer Fair, taking place on Thursday 23 April 2026, 11am–2pm at Exeter Cathedral.

This free-to-attend, drop-in event will bring together 75 local charities and community organisations, offering residents the chance to explore hundreds of volunteering opportunities in one place. With over 800 people expected to attend, the fair is the largest volunteering event of its kind in Exeter.

Plans to be submitted for Sidmouth flood protection scheme

Plans for the first phase of a scheme to reduce flood risk to more than 100 homes and businesses in Sidmouth are due to be submitted next week (w/c 14 October).

Devon County Council is submitting the plans which will provide protection from surface water around The Knowle area of the town.

The County Council has updated Sidmouth Town Council on the latest designs to inform them of the scheme arrangements.

If you come down to Castle Drogo on Thursday 17 October you’re in for a big surprise- you’ll find children doing jobs and taking on roles that adults usually do.

Takeover Day is when museums, galleries, historic homes, archives and heritage sites across England are taken over by children and young people. Supported by Arts Council England funding, charity Kids in Museums launched Takeover Day in 2010 to help historic institutions give children meaningful roles in their organisations. Last year, over 160 heritage organisations and 5,500 young people took part.

Exeter Night Shelter opens up for winter

Exeter’s night shelter has opened up for the winter, allowing rough sleepers to come inside on some of the coldest and roughest nights.

In March the City Council announced that it had secured £444,000 from the government to help run a number of new services for people who are rough sleeping including the facility over the coming winter.

Last winter the shelter – dubbed The Junction - supported 193 rough sleepers, providing a total of 3,985 bed nights.

Gina Awad of Exeter Dementia Action Alliance and Dr David Kernick have been showing a group of third year Exeter University medical students what it might be like living with dementia, as part of a special study unit.

The gambling regulator is also based out of Birmingham and will now be counted amongst the charity’s patrons. New purpose-build student accommodation should be available to all members of the community, according to City Council Leader Phil Bialyk.
