New trustee brings decades of experience in social care leadership to Westbank Community Health and Care

The Devon-wide health and wellbeing charity, Westbank Community Health and Care, is delighted to welcome Ian Hobbs, a former social worker and social care professional, to its Board of Trustees.

After 42 years working in a range of roles within Devon County Council, Ian is bringing his considerable skills and leadership experience to the third sector. As a Trustee, he is looking forward to helping the team at Westbank to deliver its ambitious programme of interrelated services and to make the changes that will be needed to adapt to the future.

A new Government report calling for a nationwide ban on pavement parking has been welcomed by Devon County Council.

The Transport Committee is recommending that a new civil offence of obstructive pavement parking is created, and that enforcement becomes the responsibility of local authorities.

The report states that in the long term a ban on pavement parking should be put in place across England, outside of London where pavement parking has been banned since 1974. It says the Government “must act” to improve the situation across the rest of England. However, it accepts it...

Three heritage attractions in Devon are now able to welcome more disabled visitors through their doors than ever before.

Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), Kents Cavern and Seaton Wetlands, have introduced a full set of products to help improve accessibility for disabled and Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users.

MP backs new ACE Tiverton special school as it welcomes first students

Local MP Neil Parish has backed ACE Tiverton to provide high-quality education to young people in Devon with special educational needs.

The special school, which opened its doors on Monday, will cater for 70 young people aged 11 to 16 years old who have identified needs relating to Autism, Communication Social, Emotional and Mental Health. The new staff have been busily preparing their classrooms in the newly refurbished building, ready for the first day of school. The building used to be a care home and has been converted by Devon County Council in a £4.5 million project.

A new scheme for people aged 55 and over which will help them enjoy the freedom and exhilaration of swimming in open water, is already oversubscribed.

Wild East Devon and LED Community Leisure have joined forces to run swimming sessions to give people the confidence to swim in open water and in the sea.

Exeter retains position amongst UK’s best universities in influential rankings

Exeter has retained its position amongst the best universities in the UK, according to the latest influential rankings.

The University preserved its 12th place nationally in the influential The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.
