Event showcases tech to help people live independently at home

Some of the latest innovations to help people live independently in their own homes will be showcased at a special event in Exeter this week (w/c 25 November).

Devon County Council and its NHS partners, in partnership with HFT (a national charity supporting adults with learning disabilities), is inviting people to the “Smarthouse” event in Exeter tomorrow (Tuesday 26 November), Wednesday 27 November and Thursday 28 November.

The Smarthouse is an interactive flat which uses technology that can provide care and support to enable people to live safely at home.

Planned closure of Old Rydon Lane in Exeter

A section of Old Rydon Lane in Exeter will be closed for five days next month while work is carried out to introduce a new cycle lane.

From Monday 9 December to Friday 13 December, Old Rydon Lane will be closed from Oaklea to the rear access of Sandy Park to enable the development of a one-way, contra-flow cycle lane.

NINETEEN teenagers have been recognised for their dedicated hard work and efforts towards conserving Dartmoor National Park, learning new skills and growing their self-awareness. The group, all of who have been involved in Dartmoor National Park Authority’s (DNPA) Junior and Youth Ranger schemes since April this year, were presented with an armful of certificates celebrating their achievements at a ‘graduation’ ceremony at Parke on Saturday 16 November. An enthralling collection of photographs and ephemera documenting a noteworthy era in North Devon’s recent history will be sold at Chilcotts Auctioneers next sale.

The assortment of photographs and ephemera comes from at least two generations of a notable family, the Nightingales, who lived near Lynton. They cover a period of time that includes one of the darkest times for the region, the Lynmouth flood of 1952.

The National Trust has announced plans to release Eurasian beavers at two sites in the south of England next spring to help with flood management and to improve biodiversity.

The beaver reintroductions will be the first made by the conservation charity, linking to its ambitions to create priority habitats for nature and to increase the diversity of species and wildlife numbers on the land in its care.

Having once been an important part of the ecosystem, beavers became extinct in the UK in the 16th century due to hunting for their fur, meat and scent glands.

Exeter Phoenix reveals plans to create a solar-powered auditorium

Exeter Phoenix have announced exciting plans for creating a solar-powered auditorium, paving a greener future for the arts in Exeter.

If Exeter Phoenix can raise £3,000 by Monday 16th December, the M&S Energy Community Fund could grant the venue the additional funds needed to replace the existing auditorium lights with a greener LED lighting system. Blacksmith tradition returns for annual competition St Clement's Day at Finch Foundry

Blacksmiths from all over the South West are set to gather at the National Trust's Finch Foundry on Saturday 23 November. Once a year, they gather at the foundry to practice their art and celebrate their patron saint, Saint Clement, harking back to medieval tradition.
