Exeter loses out in UK City of Culture award bid

Exeter has failed to make the cut for the UK City of Culture 2029 title after its bid was rejected.

The city had put significant effort into trying to secure the honour, but has not made the long-list of cities now in the running.

The snub extended to other South West cities, too, with Plymouth and Bristol also being rejected.

Exeter City Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Laura Wright (Labour, St Thomas), acknowledged it wasn’t the news the city had been hoping for.

“Naturally I’m disappointed with the news but I would like to congratulate all the...

Each four-night break is a pretend Christmas, so on arrival the guests have mulled wine and mince pies and on the second night of their stay, they have a five-course Christmas dinner including a visit from Santa with a gift for everyone. Through each break, they run a raffle with all prizes donated by the guests.

This year the nominated...

Work to resume on Moor Lane roundabout

Work is set to resume on the upgrade of Moor Lane roundabout in Exeter this week, with the scheme having been revised.

The improvements were temporarily put on hold earlier this month following complications with the utility services.

Some of the utilities need major diversions which cannot be achieved within the original scope of the scheme. It means the additional lane being developed on the approach to the Moor Lane roundabout from the direction of Sowton Industrial Estate has had to be shortened in length.

Contractor MacPlant will now re-start excavation work on...

Seagulls favour food that has been handled by humans, new research shows.

Herring gulls were presented with two identical food items – one of which they had seen a human holding.

The gulls pecked more often at the handled food, suggesting they use human actions when deciding what to eat.

The University of Exeter study follows previous research which found that staring at seagulls makes them less likely to steal food.

“UK herring gull numbers are declining, but urban populations have increased,” said lead author Madeleine Goumas, of the Centre for Ecology and...

The question of how to cut bills and reduce or eliminate carbon emissions from our homes will be explored in Exeter this week. A public meeting and discussion, organised by Transition Exeter, will look in particular at how retrofitting thousands of older and poorly insulated homes can reduce their energy requirements.

Exeter City Council last year declared a climate emergency and pledged to make the city carbon neutral by 2030. It is widely acknowledged that such an ambitious target cannot be achieved without tackling emissions from homes, particularly emissions from heating....
