Science and Tech Minister visits Exeter spin-out businesses

A range of businesses based on scientific breakthroughs from the University of Exeter were showcased to Science and Tech Minister Peter Kyle as part of his visit to the city campus.

The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology visited four Exeter spin-out companies, which are working to bring the benefits of new research findings in health, climate and AI. The new businesses are providing highly skilled graduate employment and economic growth for the city and region.

Devon Race for Life events cancelled

ORGANISERS of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events in Devon regret to announce the much-loved events are cancelled for 2020.

The charity has taken the difficult decision to withdraw all 400 Race for Life events across the UK this year to protect the country’s health as restrictions on mass gatherings caused by the COVID-19 pandemic continue.

This includes the Race for Life 5K and 10K at Plymouth, Barnstaple, Exeter planned for later this year, is now cancelled. Participants who have already signed up will be contacted directly by the charity.

Temporary “street cafe” licences are being introduced by Devon County Council to help hospitality businesses to re-open in the coming weeks, as coronavirus lockdown restrictions continue to ease.

Diseased trees to come down amid safety concerns

Work to make safe a number of trees affected by Ash Dieback disease in Exeter is set to take place over the coming months.

The City Council is currently surveying the health of Ash trees on its land across the city and early signs are not good.

It is estimated that the UK will lose up to 90% of its ash trees over the coming months and years.

Exeter Rotary Clubs raise £5,070 for hospital appeal

The three Rotary Clubs in Exeter and Topsham have proved that 'we're all in this together', by donating an amazing £5,070 to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital's “HelpUsHelpYou” Appeal.

The money will go directly towards providing extra support and essential items for the wonderful key NHS staff.

Exeter Southernhay Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Exeter initially gave a donation of £1,900 to the Appeal.

COVID-19 antibody testing begins in Devon

Healthcare staff in Devon and Cornwall will be among the first in the peninsula to be tested to see if they have had COVID-19.

The Peninsula Pathology Network, a partnership of the region’s NHS clinical commissioning groups and trusts, is now using NHS laboratories to provide antibody tests, which tell whether someone has had the virus that causes COVID-19 in the past, by analysing a blood sample.
