Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

On Saturday 12 December (6pm GMT) the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) will be hosting an online, free joint Christmas Carol Service together with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM).

Charity tree festival and donation hub launches in Princesshay

A donation hub has been set up for the first time in Princesshay as part of its Christmas 2020 charitable initiatives. The Giving Hub will occupy a unit on Roman Walk and will be collecting specific donations to support people who are homeless or vulnerably housed this Christmas.

Pioneering University of Exeter work on worldwide health challenges will continue thanks to renewed funding for a unique research centre.

The Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health at the University of Exeter has been awarded an additional £1.43m by Wellcome.

More than 5,000 people took part in Learn Devon’s Mindfulness Challenge last week.

The five-day challenge was launched to help people to look after their mental health and wellbeing during the current lockdown.

It featured a series of 20-minute videos, providing people with an opportunity to practice mindfulness – training techniques for your mind and wellbeing – on a daily basis.

Feedback from those who took part in the challenge revealed that 67% felt more relaxed and 55% said it helped them cope better with lockdown. And the vast majority (92%) said they...

Increased use of walking and cycle trails

Devon’s walking and cycle trails have seen increased use this year and with routes continuing to be busy during the current lockdown, the County Council is encouraging everyone to give each other plenty of space.

Compared with last year, the number of cycle trips recorded in 2020 has increased by 153% on the Exe Estuary Trail between Exmouth and Lympstone, 63% at Dawlish Warren, 36% at Meldon Viaduct, 53% on the rural sections of the Tarka Trail and 43% at Fremington Quay near Barnstaple.

New control centre to monitor Devon's highway network

Devon’s highway network will be monitored from a new control centre this winter.

The local group of volunteers and four-legged fundraisers are joining together with 400+ groups from across the UK to bring everyone some much needed cheer this December.
