Cranbrook to Host First eat:Festival Food and Drink Event

eat:Festivals will be hosting a food and drink festival in Cranbrook on Sunday 13 September 2026.

The festival will be happening in the heart of the town, on and surrounding the Tillhouse Road. eat:Festivals are a small social enterprise who have been delivering one day food and drink festivals in towns across the south-west for over 13 years. They are now accepting applications for all 2026 dates, including the Cranbrook one at www.eatfestivals.org/apply

Have your say on proposed changes to the Cranbrook Plan which will help shape the future of the town and as it grows for the next decade.

Residents have six weeks, from today (Monday, 17 January) until Monday, 28 February, to share their views on proposed changes to the document.

The Cranbrook Plan identifies sites in the town and the surrounding areas which will be used for housing and employment developments, as well as facilities like new schools, sport areas and community buildings.

A recent survey of the South West tech sector commissioned by Tech South West revealed that over half of tech companies in the region are finding it impossible or very difficult to recruit.

This is perhaps par for the course given the meteoric growth of the region’s tech sector, which has seen an increase in Venture Capital investment of over 500% since 2016 and a corresponding boom in job roles to fill.

Pregnant women urged to have their vaccine as cases rise

Cases of COVID-19 are at their highest in Devon this month since the pandemic began, leading health experts to renew their calls urging pregnant women to have their vaccine.

Pregnant women with COVID-19 have a higher risk of intensive care admission , however research by the UK Obstetric Surveillance System found that no fully vaccinated pregnant women were admitted to intensive care with COVID-19 in England between February and the end of September last year. During the same time period at least 55,000 pregnant women had received one or more doses in the UK.

Condition of Devon's roads has 'significantly improved'

Extensive preventative work by highways teams has improved the overall condition of Devon’s roads, with 27 per cent fewer potholes recorded than four years ago.

The figures coincide with National Pothole Day, an annual opportunity to take stock of the ‘health’ of the nation’s highways.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management says that in Devon the general state of the roads over the last four years has improved; in 2018, 67,989 potholes were recorded; in 2021 this number fell to 49,871.

After two years of uncertainty and social isolation, new research from the Jo Cox Foundation (conducted by ICM Unlimited) suggests people in the South West are less lonely - with 58% having reported ever feeling lonely in the past month, versus the national average of 67%. However the vast majority in the South West (75%) still think there is a stigma around talking about loneliness, rising to a worrying 91% among young people in the UK.
