Amicus Law solicitor urges parents to act now on SEND consultation before “rights are quietly rolled back”

Parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are being urged to engage with the Government’s ongoing consultation on proposed reforms, before changes that could significantly weaken their rights are introduced.

Amicus Law Associate Solicitor Rebecca Roberts, who specialises in education law, is calling on families across the South West to make their voices heard before the consultation closes.

Exeter’s biggest volunteer fayre showcases local volunteering opportunities

Local volunteering opportunities will be showcased at Exeter’s biggest volunteer fayre on Thursday, 29 September.

The fayre, which takes place at Exeter Central library between 10.30 – 2.30pm, is being organised by Exeter Connect, a voluntary and community sector support service which provides free advice, training, networks and events to help community groups in Exeter develop and grow.

Over 20 organisations will exhibit at the fayre, including Hospital Radio Exeter, Cygnet Theatre and Marie Curie.

RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter joins first UK-wide gift card scheme for charity shops

RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter is the latest charity in Devon to sign up to The Charity Shop Gift Card - the first multi-retailer gift card that can be used exclusively in charity shops.

The charity's shops in Bideford, Brixham, Budleigh Salterton, Exter and Newton Abbot raise money to help Devon’s animals in need. To coincide with Second-Hand September , it joins Hospiscare and national charities, Marie Curie, The Children’s Society and YMCA in accepting the card in the county.

Totnes marine tech firm boosts vital seabed conservation project

Funding agreed to turn former golf course into wildlife haven

Almost £290,000 will be spent on turning Exeter’s former Northbook golf course into a wildlife haven.

The city council’s executive agreed to allocate the money at its meeting this week, with £222,000 coming from developer contributions and the remainder from partners.

A consultation last year found that 96 per cent of people supported the idea of a wildlife arboretum – a space for wildlife habitats, trees and wildflower meadows – at the former course on Topsham Road.

Crowds, including scores of invited dignitaries, gathered in the grounds of Devon County Council’s County Hall in Exeter this afternoon to hear the High Sheriff of Devon, Richard Youngman, officially read the Proclamation confirming King Charles III as monarch.

World-renowned experts will discuss the power of "positive tipping points" to tackle the climate crisis at the University of Exeter next week.
