A Devon & Cornwall Police officer has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to policing in the New Year Honours List.

Temporary Inspector Mark Ruston, who has served with the Force for 26 years, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in policing. He has led multiple multi-agency responses to civil major incidents and has worked across operations, events and contingency planning in the Force.

Drivers advised to plan ahead as lane remains closed on M5 near Exeter

National Highways is advising drivers travelling southbound on the M5 near Exeter to be aware of delays during the New Year holiday period.

A half-mile section of lane one of the southbound carriageway between junctions 30 and 31 has been closed for safety reasons due to a bridge defect.

The fractured bridge expansion joint plate was detected by a monitoring system in operation on the Exe viaduct, carrying the M5 over the River Exe, and will require specialist repair work early in the new year.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is urgently appealing to the public to think carefully before dialling 999 due to the extreme demand it is currently facing following the four-day Christmas break.

At 11:30 on Wednesday 28 December there were 482 patients waiting for ambulances across the South West, with 106 patients awaiting handover at hospitals across the South West.

And SWASFT has today (Wednesday) declared a Critical Incident because the extreme pressures it is experiencing are affecting its ability to respond to patients.

Devon Tesco shoppers have been their most generous ever in support of foodbanks and local charities, helping to make it a record-breaking year.

The total amount of food donated by Tesco shoppers to the Trussell Trust and FareShare during 2022 was equivalent of 12.5 million meals – 271,589 of which came from Devon.

The donations to the Trussell Trust help food banks to provide emergency food parcels to people in crisis, while donations to FareShare support frontline community charities. Tesco has also topped up all customer donations during the collection by 20% in cash,...
