The Devon County Show is delighted to announce that acclaimed actor and countryside advocate Martin Clunes will officially open the Heavy Horse Festival, in association with WHISTLEFISH, at 10am on Thursday 21st May .

A lifelong champion of Britain’s native heavy horse breeds, Martin Clunes is not only a familiar face on screen but also a dedicated heavy horse owner. His own collection of gentle giants has shaped a deep personal commitment to preserving these iconic breeds, many of which are now considered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust to be at risk.

Cyclist seriously injured in Exeter collision

Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a collision in Exeter, which left a cyclist seriously injured.

The collision happened in Rydon Lane, at the junction with Old Rydon Lane, just before 5.45pm on Tuesday 17 January.

It involved a grey VW Transporter, driven by a local woman in her 60s, and a pedal cycle ridden by a local man in his 50s.

The cyclist was taken to The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with injuries initially thought to be life-threatening, but later deemed serious.

The driver of the VW Transporter was not injured....

Gritting teams continue efforts to keep Devon moving

Devon’s gritter drivers are facing another busy 24 hours as the big freeze continues across the county.

Following today’s wintry showers in parts of the county, wet roads could become icy this evening as temperatures again drop below freezing.

With road surface temperatures set to fall below -4C from this afternoon and into this evening, gritters have already headed out on all of the county’s main precautionary gritting routes and they will carry out a further treatment at 2am.

Around 14 miles of cycle routes around Exeter are also being treated twice today....

People who have a learning disability and those who care for them are being reminded that it’s not too late for them to have a free flu vaccination and additional Covid-19 booster.

Preventing Covid-19 and flu is particularly important for people with learning disabilities, who are much more vulnerable to both viruses.

Risk of snow as cold snap continues

A warning has been issued over the risk of snow and ice across Devon this evening and people in the county are being advised to take extra care when travelling.

Temperatures have remained low throughout today and while this evening is not forecast to be as cold as last night, the Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for widespread ice and wintry showers which could cause disruption from 6pm tonight until midday tomorrow.

Stagecoach, the country’s biggest bus and coach operator, has launched the search for a team of new graduates to join its UK-wide business from September.

Applications have opened for ten people to join its two-year extensive graduate training programme. ‘Missing link’ in city’s network approved

A planned new cycle route in Exeter, previously described as the ‘missing link’ in the city’s network, has moved a step closer.

Devon County Council says the proposed 700-metre stretch along Rifford Road, between the junctions with Ludwell Lane and Honiton Road, would complete the city’s north-to-south E12 route.

Once completed, it will form a continuous route running from Polsloe Bridge station to the new railway station being constructed at Marsh Barton.

Exeter Queen Street redesign agreed

A redesign of Exeter’s Queen Street has been approved, with previously agreed cycle lanes being scrapped.

Last year, councillors agreed to spend £250,000 constructing a layout similar to the current ‘pop-up’ one, which was installed early in 2021 to help with social distancing and to encourage more walking and cycling.

Another area added to Exeter's food waste scheme

Another part of Exeter will get food waste collections later this month, as the council continues its gradual rollout across the city.

Properties in the St Loyes ward will receive new caddies this week. Collections will begin in the week commencing Monday 23 January.

The first phase of the scheme began in 2021, with 1,300 properties in Alphington receiving weekly food waste collections. The rest of Alphington and 2,000 properties in Beacon Heath and Pinhoe were added last year.
