Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Amber Foundation appointed charity of the year for Devon County Show 2023

If you’ve visited Exeter recently, you will almost certainly have noticed the increased numbers of rough sleepers in the city.

According to a recent report from Shelter, 3700 people were deemed homeless last year in Devon and Cornwall.

The cost-of-living crisis is much to blame and impending budget cuts to homelessness prevention schemes are likely to worsen the situation.

It is for these reasons that the Devon County Agricultural Association has selected the Amber Foundation as it’s charity of the year for 2023.

Exeter Airport gears up for start of busy summer season

Exeter Airport is gearing up for the start of a busy summer season during May, with flights to seven destinations taking off with the UK’s leading travel brand TUI.

Twice-weekly services to Corfu, Dalaman, Menorca, and Zante began this week (1-7 May), as well as flights to Crete and Rhodes, which operate once a week.

This will be followed by a twice-weekly service to Antalya, Turkey from Saturday 27 May. In addition, operator TUI began flying to Paphos and Majorca in March, and April respectively.

Labour retain control in Exeter

Labour is still the dominant force on Exeter City Council but experienced a mixed night in the local elections.

For the second year running, it gained a second seat in the former Tory stronghold of Topsham, but lost a seat in St Thomas to former Lib Dem council leader Adrian Fullam.

Meanwhile, in the only other seat to change hands, the Greens won in Newtown and St Leonard’s, which had previously been occupied by an Independent who didn’t seek re-election.

Citizens Advice Exeter and Citizens Advice Torbay have welcomed Sue Julyan as their new chief executive. The local advice charities are independent but share some management functions under a partnership agreement.

Sue joins after working in education for more than 20 years, most recently as headteacher of Torre C of E Academy in Torquay. She also has experience of the voluntary sector, having been a Scout leader for nearly 10 years and a volunteer for the Purple Angels Memory Café.

'Crucial part' of Exeter's cycle network set to be approved

A new cycle route along one of Exeter’s busiest residential streets is expected to be approved next week.

Devon County Council says the proposed 700-metre stretch along Rifford Road, between the junctions with Ludwell Lane and Honiton Road, is said to form a “crucial part” of the city’s north-to-south E12 route.

Once completed, it will create a continuous route between Polsloe Bridge station and the new railway station at Marsh Barton.

Police appeal after Exeter phone shop burglary

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following reports of a burglary at a store in Exeter City Centre.

Officers were contacted just before 11.15pm on Wednesday 3 May to reports of a break in at a phone store on Exeter High Street.

Investigation officer DI Guy Biggar said: “We are currently investigating a high value burglary which happened in the 3G Ltd store in the City Centre. A medical student at The University of Exeter has been confirmed as a guest speaker on a discussion panel at the launch of the Exeter Respect Festival this evening (Thursday 4th May).

Second year student Naabil Khan will speak alongside Exeter alumni Dr Suaad Genem George at the 26th Respect Festival which brings together communities together to celebrate their differences and commonalities.
