Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Soapbox Science returns to Exeter

A fantastic line up of women who are making significant contributions to the scientific community will be showcasing their research on 10thJune.

Soapbox Science is returning to the city for its 7th event since starting in 2015, with 12 female scientists standing on soapboxes in Piazza Terracina, Exeter Quayside to talk to the public.

This event is part of an international initiative by Soapbox Science, which aims to bring science to the general public and challenge gender stereotypes in science careers.

Bike share schemes grow in popularity as new report reveals health and money-saving benefits

More than 54,000 daily rides were taken on shared bikes last year with the schemes helping to boost physical and mental health, save people money and improve connectivity.

A new report by the national shared transport charity Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK) shows bike share schemes recorded nearly 20 million hires between September 2021 and 2022 – an average of 54,285 per day.

It is up from 41,599 daily hires in the previous 12 months, with the number of locations of schemes across the UK also growing from 39 to 43.

Devon cat charity launches £100,000 fundraising campaign

A Devon cat welfare charity has launched a £100,000 fundraising campaign in response to the increasing demand for its help.

Hector’s House Cat Rescue was set up by Zara Oldfield in 2020 during the Covid pandemic to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned unneutered tom cats. It became a registered charity in November 2020 and has grown to become one of the biggest cat welfare charities in the region, operating across Devon.
