Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Breast Cancer Now awards funding to Exeter researchers to understand autistic adults’ experience of breast cancer

Autistic adults with breast cancer will be invited to share their experiences of diagnosis and treatment as part of a new research project funded by Breast Cancer Now.

The research and support charity has awarded funding of £173,189 to Dr Char Goodwin, Professor Manuela Barreto and Professor Ginny Russell at the University of Exeter. During this three-year study, the researchers will interview autistic adults who have had a breast cancer diagnosis about their experiences from diagnosis to finishing hospital treatment.

A University of Exeter academic who led a major UK-wide research project to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on society, law, health, and culture has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Professor Pascale Aebischer became involved in Pandemic and Beyond following her long career as an expert in Shakespeare and performance, as well as digital innovations in theatre. During the pandemic she carried out her own research on how regional theatres coped with being closed to audiences.

Citizens Advice Exeter’s long-serving Chair has received an MBE for services to charity in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Care home takes resident on first trip outside in 10 years

OCTOGENARIAN Edward Perryman visited Exmouth beach and ate an ice cream on his first trip outside in ten years.

Edward, a resident at The Old Rectory care home in Exeter, was transported along Exmouth beach in a specially adapted beach wheelchair. He watched the waves crashing onto the shore, before eating an ice cream on the seafront.

The momentous moment was thanks to The Beach Wheelchair Project and the perseverance of Southern Healthcare staff, who helped empower Edward to leave the care home where he lives.
