Devon County Show Confirms 106,000 Visitors in Another Record-Breaking Year

The tickets have now been counted, and Devon County Show has officially confirmed an audited attendance of 106,000 visitors for 2026 — an uplift of 5,000 on last year’s record-breaking figure.

This year’s Show coincided with the late May half‑term break, a rare calendar alignment that contributed to an especially strong family turnout. While children go free on Saturday and therefore cannot be fully audited, the organisers witnessed a noticeably higher number of young visitors enjoying the attractions, activities and livestock displays.

Mercure Southgate celebrates Beaujolais arrival

The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel celebrated the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau 2013 by cycling the equivalent distance from Exeter to Paris on a static bicycle to raise money for their nominated charity Hospiscare.

The staff at the hotel took it in turns to ride the static bike on Thursday 21st November between 7am and 7pm, covering 374 miles in 12 hours. The team cycled in 15 minute slots and were supported with donations from hotel guests.

Police operation to stop-check commercial goods vehicles

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police are involved in a three week operation aimed at reducing road casualties and collisions in the force area. Operation Fatigue will run over a period of three weeks during the months of November and December and will involve the stopping and checking of goods vehicles as they travel through both counties. This will include both national and foreign based vehicles. The operation is being carried out in partnership with VOSA.

Essential investigations at Mamhead Slipway in Exmouth

Essential geotechnical and environmental investigations will be taking place around, and under, the Mamhead Slipway in Exmouth from Monday 2 December.

This investigation work is expected to last two to three weeks and is necessary as preparation for the longer term replacement or improvement of the slipway, a key project within the Exmouth Vision.

Engineers will drill boreholes through the slipway to gain information about the makeup of the geology beneath the seabed.

Link between poverty and ADHD

Researchers at the University of Exeter have found evidence of a link between poverty and attention defect hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

An analysis of more than 19,500 UK children aged 13 and under found that there was a significantly higher number of children from families living below the poverty line had been diagnosed with ADHD.

The study also found that a child with ADHD was roughly three times more likely to have parents who live in social housing than owned their own home.

Man could lose sight after nightclub attack

A 47 year-old man may lose his sight after an unprovoked attack in an Exeter night club.

The victim was hit in the eyes with a bottle or glass while in Club Rococo early on Sunday Morning (24 November).

The man was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery but there is still a concern that the damage to his sight may be permanent.

Police investigating the assault are currently studying CCTV but as yet no arrests have been made. A police spokesman said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed anything in the club in Mary Arches Street on Saturday night...

Tour of Britain brings in £5.9m

This year’s Devon stage of the Tour of Britain had the largest turnout in the tour’s seven year history bringing almost £5.9 million of additional spending to the county along the course of the tour.

250,000 spectators are thought to have turned out to watch the race along the 85 mile route between Sidbury and Dartmoor.

Around 62,000 people are thought to have stayed in the county overnight bringing extra trade to the local tourism industry.

Adam Isaac helps Barnstaple get festive

Exeter singing star Adam Isaac helped the people of Barnstaple begin their festive celebrations by performing at their Christmas lights switch on.

Adam, who was mentored by Sir Tom Jones in the 2012 series of The Voice, performed material from his own album Train Tracks and also covered tracks by artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Eurythmics. Girl band Stooshe and Britain’s Got Talent stars The Luminites also performed.

Murder suspect appears in court

Update: The 43 year-old who died after being severely injured at a house on Alphington Road has been named as Stephen Michael Crook.

Ryan Singleton, 25, appeared in court today and will begin preliminary hearings on December 12.

Singleton will also return to court for a bail hearing tomorrow.

South West better off on energy bills

Energy consumers in the South West are better off than elsewhere in the UK according to the energy watchdog, Ofgem.

A report by Ofgem shows that five of the ‘Big Six’ energy companies were not sufficently demonstrating value for money.

The report however praises Western Power Distribution’s (WPD) for putting in place a plan to reduce costs for customers.

WPD only operates in the South West, The Midlands and South Wales meaning that those elsewhere in the country must use another provider.
