'Major incident' declared in Dawlish as storms batter Devon

A major incident has been declared in Dawlish after part of the railway line was left suspended in mid air as storms battered Devon.

Twenty people were evacuated from their homes in the town, meanwhile two people were rescued from a vehicle which was trapped in floodwater about 9.20 last night.

Police have asked that people wanting to see the scene at Dawlish stay away to "allow responders to do everything possible to help local residents."

As the Met Office warn of five more days of severe stormy weather this week, Deputy Chief Forecaster Chris Tubbs took to youtube to explain what causes it.

Speaking from The Met Office building Exeter Chris warns that as new weather systems travel across the South West further disruption is expected.

He also cautioned that the worst storm is likely to hit on saturday and urged people to stay away from the coast as there would be big waves.

West Exe College has received a “good” rating from education inspectors.

A team of inspectors from regulator Ofsted visited the school for two days in an announced inspection in mid-January in which they obsered lessons and met with students and staff.

In their report, inspectors praised the good progress made among all students including those with special educational needs or disabilities, commenting: “Individual students’ needs are very well understood and skilled support is quickly put in place when necessary.”

Conmen took £100,000 from elderly victims

Two conmen were jailed for a total of nine years on Thursday 30 January 2014 after conning 48 elderly victims out of tens of thousands of pounds. A third man was given a suspended sentence and ordered to carry out unpaid work. The trio from Newark, Nottinghamshire, operated across the country and were arrested in Ripon by North Yorkshire Police after a resident became suspicious about the men’s claims and quality of work. Parachutes stolen in Exmouth

Police are appealing for information after three valuable parachutes were stolen from a van in Exmouth. Thieves broke into the yellow Volkswagen Transporter van while it was parked near to the Imperial Hotel on The Esplanade on the evening of 31 January. They forced open the passenger door and stole three rucksacks containing Javelin parachutes, valued at £18,000, and a £1,000 MacBook Pro laptop. A twitter appeal by local businessman Adam Stone against a company’s 'ecological vandalism' has won a £500 donation to the Devon Wildlife Trust. While passing Exeter Car Dealers Bristol Street Motors, Adam saw an employee release handfuls of helium balloons into the sky rather than safely deflate them. A new project offering one-to-one support to carers and family members of people with drink or drug problems is looking to recruit more volunteers in Exeter and East Devon.

A joint initiative between Devon Carers and Recoverylink CIC, You First is a peer-support buddying scheme that matches people who are struggling to cope with caring for a family member, relative or friend with drink or drug problems with someone who has experienced similar circumstances but found the resilience to manage their own lives successfully despite the difficulties.

Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group has thrown its weight behind a national campaign to encourage older women to visit their GP if they are unsure about breast cancer.

With one in three women (35 per cent) diagnosed with breast cancer in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset each year aged 70 or over, older women should not assume they are no longer at risk of breast cancer.
