Collision in Barnstaple results in casualty

A woman sustained minor injuries after being involved in a road traffic collision today ( Saturday 8th February) in Barnstaple.

The fire service were called to the incident at 3.33pm at Prixford Hill in Barnstaple.

Two fire appliances from Barnstaple were mobilised.

The collision involved two vehicles, however, all persons involved were free and clear of the vehicles upon the arrival of the Fire Service.

One female was treated with minor injuries by ambulance crew.

No other casualities were reported.

The South West is again being readied for a battering by the elements as high winds and heavy rain approach the region. Met Office warnings for heavy rain are in place prompting further flood fears as another 10mm-20mm of rain is expected to fall on already saturated ground. The Met Office has said: “The public should be prepared for disruption to transport and locally to power supplies, particularly when combined with the impacts of heavy rainfall.”

South West leaders call for urgent action

In the face of further incoming storms, leaders across the South West peninsula have written to the Prime Minister demanding urgent action from the Government over the destroyed track at Dawlish. The rail line was severed after severe weather destroyed an 80m section of track near Dawlish station was along with a section of seawall. Due to the extent of the damage the repairs are not accepted to be completed until the 18th of March however the actual date has yet to be confirmed. Stagecoach extend bus routes to ease rail closure

Stagecoach South West announced today that, for the duration of the Dawlish railway closure, it is extending its ‘Exeter Plus’ Dayrider and Megarider Zone to include Dawlish.

The change is effective immediately and means that a week of unlimited bus travel between Dawlish and Exeter costs just £20, reducing the cost of a weekly ticket by a quarter.

The operator hopes that that move will help ease travel problems for local residents commuting between Dawlish and Exeter by encouraging people not to resort to their cars on the busy A379 route.

Concerns over 'meaningless promises' on rail resilience funding

Concerns have been raised that the £31.1m promised by the Government last year to secure the South West’s railways against severe weather was not delivered, despite widespread support from local authorities. Police have discovered a suspected cannabis growing business at a property in Brixham.

Acting on intelligence, officers from Brixham Neighbourhood Team, entered a premises on South Furzeham Road at around 2.30pm on Friday 31 January. They called for assistance and when additional local officers arrived the two occupants at the property were arrested. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has been awarded a £390,000 government grant to install an electric vehicle charging network across the majority of its buildings.

The grant is part of a £9 million Government investment to boost the number of charging points for electric cars across the country to promote the benefits of ultra-low emission vehicles.
