A Devon-based boat club says more people across Devon are turning away from traditional ownership in favour of flexible memberships that offer access to the sea without the expense and upkeep of owning a vessel.

Freedom Boat Club, which operates from Beacon Quay in Torquay Harbour, has reported growing interest as rising maintenance costs, storage fees and insurance bills make private boat ownership increasingly expensive for many households.

Instead, members pay a monthly fee to access a fleet of boats that are cleaned, fuelled, insured and maintained by the company....

Exeter Bus Users Protected by Price Freezes

Regular bus users in Exeter are to be protected by a price freeze later this month as Stagecoach South West raise bus fares by an average of 2.6%.

Under the plans the Exeter Dayrider, Exeter Megarider Plus tickets and the unlimited day travel Explorer tickets as well as most of the region’s megarider tickets will see their prices frozen in an effort to limit the affect of the price on regular bus users.

How people break free from a criminal lifestyle will be the subject of a fascinating free talk by Exeter University psychologist Dr Jo Day.

Devon and Cornwall Police Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer has this week met Pope Francis in the Vatican to raise awareness of human trafficking and slavery.

Chief Constable Sawyer joined fellow police leaders from around the world as well as Home Secretary Theresa May at the conference hosted by Pope Francis in the Vatican.

Paignton Zoo’s baby Bornean orang utan Tatau is celebrating her first birthday.

She was born on 11 April 2013 to mother Mali and father Demo.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park Director of Operations and Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said: “She is doing well. Her progress is fairly typical for a one-year old orang. She is not weaned yet, but tries any food that is passing on the way to mum’s mouth! She picks at the watery soft items like cucumbers and tomatoes, but is mainly just sucking on them wistfully!”

RAFPA South West branch calls for new members

The South West Branch of the RAF Police Association are calling for new members.

They meet every two months at The Hunting Lodge near Ivybridge on the first Wednesday of alternate months at 11.30am. Meetings are followed by lunch.

The next meeting is taking place on Wednesday 4 June.

Several members also take part in the Cenotaph parade on Remembrance Sunday in London, joining several dozen others from all over the country, with one or two travelling across the pond. Members also attend parades, when their standard is carried, and always meet for Christmas lunch....
