Public Consultation Opens on Proposed Merger Between Exeter College and Petroc

Exeter College and Petroc have today launched a public consultation on a proposed merger that would see two Devon colleges come together to form a new College Group.

If approved, the new organisation, the Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group (ENDC), would serve more than 16,000 learners across Devon, employ nearly 2,000 staff and have a combined turnover exceeding £100 million.

The South West Coast Path is inviting businesses to partner with the charity during 2014 to deliver some vital path improvements and protect this great tourism asset.

Keats urgently needs your help

Please please can someone help Keats? We have 3 weeks to decide on his future.

Keats was originally brought to us last October. He has lived outside all his life and was being fed by an elderly lady. As he as aged and his eyesight decreased, he has increasingly pushed to come inside and enjoy some home comforts. Unfortunately the lady could not allow this, so Keats has found himself here. Due to his age he has limited eye sight, but otherwise he is in good health.

Men sentenced for misleading consumers

Two men, Neil Mendoza of Exeter and Michael Girvin of Exmouth, have received suspended imprisonment sentences and community service, for their part in a scam to mislead time share owners.

Sentenced this week, Mendoza received nine months imprisonment suspended for two years, with 200 hours community service, and Girvin received 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years with 200 hours community service. Girvin also received disqualification as a company director.

Exeter is expected to benefit from a major economic boost from the Rugby World Cup 2015, City Council leaders have said. With Sandy Park in Exeter hosting three games of the Rugby World Cup, all indications show that spending in Devon's capital will increase significantly as a result. Science and humanities subjects at the University of Exeter rank amongst the world’s best, according to an influential international league table published today. The league table, which measures the reputation of the subjects taught at 2,858 universities around the world, ranks Exeter University in the top 200 for 15 of the 30 subjects measured. Exeter’s Humanities College was particularly successful with English language and literature ranking rose the rankings for a third year as the 43rd best in the World while Geography also improved on last year to be named as the 21st best....

Local businesses support sleep-out fundraiser

Several businesses are supporting Exeter YMCA’s biggest fundraising event, Sleep Easy 2014, by donating prizes.

Sleep Easy involves members of the public spending a night under the stars to raise awareness and funds for Exeter YMCA’s work of supporting homeless young people.

Last year over 180 people took part, raising over £30,000, and Exeter YMCA hope Sleep Easy 2014 will outdo last year’s success.

To spur the participants on in their fundraising, prizes have been donated for the top fundraisers.

Five Alternative routes to Dawlish

Network Rail has said they will consider five alternative routes as a long term response to the destroyed line at Dawlish.

Options include creating a new passenger route using the existing freight train lines at Alphington and Heathfield near Newton Abbot. Another option is to reinstate the closed Okehampton line which is expected to cost up to £700m. Three new routes travelling to Newton Abbot propose new tunnels being built and would maintain a high number of trains travelling through Dawlish. Valentine’s Day marked the beginning of the annual Nest Box Week, and bird lovers flocked to the Axe Estuary Wetlands near Seaton on Wednesday 19th Feb for ‘Give a bird a home’ – an opportunity to create a bespoke nest box.

Police mount dawn raids in Exeter

Two men have been arrested after three drugs warrants were executed under the Misuse of Drugs Act in Exeter on Tuesday morning (25 February). Devon and Cornwall Police officers were supported by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) in a new partnership called Operation Assist. Officers entered three properties in the city at around 6.15am, before arresting two men on suspicion of the production and supply of Class B drugs. The men, aged 44 and 51, remain in police custody.
