New Measures designed to help home and business owners protect their properties from future flood events were approved by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) Cabinet meeting this week.

It all starts with a 100m tape, paper plan, old roadside boards cut up into 8” squares, bags of 6” nails, a hammer, marker pen, two energetic men and the passion and determination of the many volunteers who are involved with putting on the Devon County Show. Heavy rain expected to cause issues for the organisers of this weekend’s Ten Tors challenge. As a result of the recent rain, concerns have been raised over the state of several car parks near the starting line in Okehampton, making them unavailable for spectator’s vehicles. Over 60 independent business owners and retail chain managers attended an event at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Thursday 30th April, to learn about a proposed Business Improvement District for Exeter.

Exeter secures AstraZeneca partnership

The University of Exeter has announced a unique collaboration with the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, to conduct research into the effectiveness and safety of cutting-edge drugs.

Exeter Chiefs gear up for The Big Walk 2014

Exeter Chiefs are throwing their sizeable weight behind the forthcoming ‘Exeter Foundation Charity Walk’ which has been set up to support a minimum of 20 local charities and organisations. Russian Warships pass South West Coast

A group of Russian warships with nuclear capabilities has passed by the South West coast today as part of a routine transit into the North Atlantic.

Russian news agencies this morning reported that the aircraft-carrying cruiser the Admiral Kuznetsov and the heavy nuclear guided-missile cruiser Petr Velikiy had entered the English channel.

The Russian vessels have been shadowed through their transit by British destroyer, the HMS Dragon, in what the Royal Navy describes as a “well-established and standard response to such events.”

Thousands prepare for Ten Tors challenge

Thousands of young people will set off on the 2014 Ten Tors challenge this weekend, spending two days in small self-sufficient teams walking through some of the most stunning scenery Dartmoor has to offer.

Dartmoor National Park Authority has been working closely with the Army in terms of route changes and providing training to team managers to ensure that the event has minimum impact on the fabric of the moor and its wildlife.

Police investigate after knifepoint robbery in Tiverton

Police are appealing for information following a robbery in Tiverton yesterday (7th May). Just before 1.00pm at the entrance to People’s Park, the offender threatened an 18-year-old victim with a knife before stealing money and a mobile phone. The suspect is also believed to have approached another man in the walk way between Morrison’s supermarket and Market Carpets shortly before this incident but nothing was stolen. Police are keen to trace 5 school children who may have witnessed this incident.

Update: A38 re-opened after armed police incident

Update: Police have confrimed they have detained a man in Tideford after reports he was armed and making threats.

The A38, which was closed as a precaution, is now open.

Police say there is no danger to public.
