The Chattiest Streets in the South West are the Happiest Streets

Making small talk with a neighbour doesn’t always come naturally for people in the South West but when they do make the effort they feel happier, a new study has revealed.

A national survey carried out by Lottery-funded initiative The Big Lunch, the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, found that more than 70% of people in the South West said that small talk makes them feel happier, despite it not coming naturally for 40% of those who responded.

Concerns raised about financial costs for parents of premature and sick babies

Neil Parish MP attended Bliss’ parliamentary event on Thursday 27 February. The campaign and reception were organised by Bliss, the special care baby charity, which provides support to families of babies born premature and sick across the UK.

The campaign has been launched with the release of their report called ‘It’s not a game: the very real costs of having a premature or sick baby’, which is based on a survey of over 1300 parents and 178 hospitals in England, Scotland and Wales. The report found that:

No rest for Devon's Firefighters

After months of bad weather the sun is finally back and South West locals are lapping up the good weather whilst they can. However, the sun does not mean a break for all of us, with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service being called to many incidents over the weekend.

In the early hours of this morning ( Sunday 16th March) firefighters from Danes Castle were called to conduct a lift rescue.

Crew spent around half an hour rescuing two people trapped in a lift at Birks Grange, New North Road, Exeter at 12.15am.

Teignmouth Crash UPDATE

A woman who sustained head injuries following a crash on Exeter Road, in Teignmouth yesterday has been transferred to Derriford Hospital.

A female casualty was initially taken to Torbay Hospital after the vehicle she was travelling in crashed into a lampost just before 1pm on Friday 14th March.

Due to the severity of her injuries she has now been transferred to Derriford Hospital.

Firefighters conduct toilet rescue

Firefighters were called to toilets on the sea front of Budleigh Salterton today to rescue an elderly man trapped inside.

An appliance from Budleigh Salterton attended the incident at 3.53pm.

On arrival crews found a man to be trapped inside the toilet block and rescued him using small tools.

Microwave fire results in casualty

An eldery woman has been treated for smoke inhalation after her microwave caught on fire.

Crews were called to the woman's property in Wychall Park, Seaton at 10.26am after reports of a microwave fire.

The fire, which was out on crews arrival, occured because toast had been put in the microwave.

The fire resulted in ambulance staff attending, with the elderly woman being treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Crews called to Marsh Barton blaze

Crew from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to extinguish a baler which was on fire at Exeter's Marsh Barton Industrial Estate this morning.

An appliance from Danes Castle and from Middlemoor attended the incident, at Devon Contract Waste Marsh Barton, at 8am this morning.

Firefighters attended the scene after reports of a baler on fire.

On arrival they found a fire involving a plastics baling machine within an industrial building. Fire crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel jet.

Plans to combat £1m overspend in Exeter housing

Exeter City Council has set out a new action plan on how it maintains and manages housing in response to a £1 million overspend from the council’s housing revenue account (HRA).

The action plan could see some tenants prevented from transferring into a new council house or even face eviction or fines if their property is in a poor state of repair.

The council will also look to better understand the reasons behind the overspend ahead of a major restructure of the service due to begin later this year.
