The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

Unique fundraiser is food for thought

Dining in the Dark, a gourmet fundraising event launched to raise both awareness of visual impairment and vital funds for WESC Foundation – the South West’s specialist centre for visual impairment – is being hosted once again by the Salutation Inn, Topsham, on 11, 12 and 13 November.

Paignton Zoo keepers Dave Rich and Lorraine Miller are going to New Zealand to start a new life together – along with a zoo full of animals.

The couple will be taking their experience and training to New Zealand, where they have both been offered jobs at Orana Wildlife Park, near Christchurch. And their experience of working with gorillas means that they could be part of an historic move to bring these charismatic great apes to New Zealand for the first time.

The city was packed with servicemen and women, past and present along with hundreds of onlookers.

Sun shines on Ottery Food & Families Festival

Thousands flocked to Ottery for the second Food and Families Festival. The town centre was packed with people determined to make the most of the festival and they were rewarded with unending blue skies and culinary delights.

“We were blessed with an exceptionally sunny June day,” said Ruud Jansen Venneboer, one of the festival organisers.

“People came in their droves to celebrate all that is good about the region, and we were delighted to welcome so many first-time visitors to the town.”

Exeter CAB is recruiting gateway assessors

Gateway Assessors are volunteers who conduct the first interview with the client.

They identify the client's issues, decide the next best step for the client (whether internal or external referral) and collect information which might be used to lobby local and government policy to improve the lives of our clients.

If you have six to eight hours a week spare for at least six months and enjoy working with people, they would love to hear from you.

Hole In The Wall may shut for up to 3 months

The owner of Exeter's Hole In The Wall pub told the Daily it could be three months before it can reopen.

George Sloan (pictured) said the blaze had caused severe damage which was compounded by the work undertaken by firefighters to make the building safe.

He is now talking to companies about what will be a 'huge' clean up operation.

It is believed the fire started at the rear of the building at around 4am yesterday (Friday) but it's not thought to be suspicious.

Exeter City player's twitter apology

Exeter City Captain Danny Coles has issued a statement, via Exeter City Football Club's official website, apologising for his recent offensive tweets.

Coles recently took to twitter to criticise England’s Phil Jagielka during England's match, describing him as ' a car crash waiting to happen.'

Twitter user Will Wenley jokingly replied ' So like you for Exeter', which resulted in several offensive messages being tweeted from Coles' account.

Coles tweeted ' F**k off ****' to the 14 year old twitter user, followed by ' If you can't take banter don't give it.'

Crealy Great Adventure Park plans to go greener

A planning application for Orchard Solar Park, a 7.5 MW solar development at Shepherd’s Farm, near Clyst St. Mary, has been submitted to East Devon District Council by Wiltshire-based Solstice Renewables.

The solar park is adjacent to Crealy Great Adventure Park and would supply renewable electricity directly to Crealy, enabling the local family visitor attraction to benefit from lower cost electricity and improve its sustainability.

Information day on sight loss in Exeter

An information day about eye health, eye conditions and support available for people who already have sight loss, is being held for residents of Exeter at the city centre Boots Opticians store, on Friday 27 June, 10am – 4pm.

Organised by Action for Blind People (Action) and Boots Opticians, the day will raise awareness of the importance of good eye health and offer advice and support on services available for blind and partially sighted people. Volunteers at A la Ronde, the National Trust property near Exmouth, are busy sorting books of all shapes and sizes, titles and themes ready for the forthcoming season.

Salli Carr-Griffin, Assistant Property Manager, says: “The second-hand book sale area in the house is in its fifth year and is hugely popular.
