This summer, Brixham’s Fish Market will come alive with flavour and festivity as the South West Sardine Festival arrives on Sunday 03 August 2025, bringing a vibrant new celebration to the heart of one of Britain’s most historic fishing towns.

Free to attend and running from 12:00 to 21:30, the festival invites locals and visitors alike to experience a day inspired by coastal traditions, from the South West to the Mediterranean. At its heart is the British sardine - abundant, sustainable, and caught right here in the South West.

6th Exeter Pride set to be the biggest yet

The Lord Mayor of Exeter will sound an air horn to start the South West's biggest free celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities in the region.

Councillor Rachel Lyons will, at noon, start the largest rainbow flag parade the city has seen as part of Exeter Pride on Saturday 10 May.

Preparations are well in hand for what will be the sixth Exeter Pride.

Kevin Marsh appointed Trust’s director of nursing

THE Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Marsh as director of nursing.

Kevin had been interim director of nursing for the Trust and joins substantively following a rigorous interview process.

Kevin brings a wealth of acute hospital experience from Derriford in Plymouth, where he was deputy director of nursing from July 2006 until joining the Trust in March 2014.

He had previously held the roles of senior nurse manager (general surgery), head of nursing surgical services and acting chief nurse at Plymouth.

Research carried out by The Big Lunch has found that while feelings of loneliness are on the rise, the simple act of talking to neighbour is seen by those questioned in the South West as not only a way to brighten someone’s day, but as a lifeline for those who live alone.

Operation Derig is back

Operation Derig, an operation where police officers aim to disrupt and prevent illegal raves, is back in force this bank holiday weekend.

Officers from both Devon and Cornwall will be taking part in the operation.

Local radio controlled flying club to feature at major hobby show

Blackdown Radio Control Flying Club is set to star at a major regional hobby show taking place next month.

Based on the disused World War Two runway near Smeatharpe village - between Honiton and Taunton - the team will wow the crowds at the South West Model & Hobby Show with their range of scale model radio-controlled aircraft and 3D aerobatic performances.

Critically acclaimed play to tour the West Country

From Common Players, in association with Exeter Northcott Theatre, a new production of Jez Butterworth’s critically acclaimed play, Jerusalem, will tour the WestCountry in May and June. The new production will be made in a new way which will involve local artists and communities and teach new skills to those involved.

The House Clearance team at Hospiscare in Exeter has won the Most Inventive Hospice Retail Initiative award for its work generating new income and also helping raise public awareness about the support the hospice offers bereaved families.

Reef decline food fears

If coral reef health continues to decline, reefs of the future may not be able to support the food demands and livelihoods of millions of people living in the coastal tropics, according to new research from the Universities of Exeter and Queensland.

The findings, to be reported in the journal Current Biology on 5 May, are based on a study of Caribbean coral reefs and their ability to support reef fisheries.

CCTV of Paignton armed robbery released

Detectives investigating the armed robbery at a Paignton jewellers have released CCTV of men they would like to speak to in connection with the incident. One man, 21-year-old Zico Rawlinson of Barton, Torquay, was last week charged with robbery and possession of an offensive and appeared before magistrates. Now investigating officers are releasing CCTV film taken at the store in a bid to identify two other suspects. Reg and Margaret Nott celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on 30 April.

Eighty-nine year old Reg and Margaret, 84, were married at St Mary’s Church in Morchard Bishop and farmed at East Worlington until 1990 when they moved to Crediton.

Reg is a keen gardener and grows flowers and vegetables.

Both love quiz programmes, their favourite being Countdown. Their Countdown-themed anniversary cake even had the word “anniversary” on it with the letters jumbled up, just like the TV quiz.
