Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Superheroes to the rescue, to religious education and beyond….

A new initiative that uses superheroes to teach Religious Education at a school in Cornwall has won a national award.

The distinctive characters, called Know-it-all-Nicky, Debate-it-all-Derek, Ask-it-all-Ava and Have-a-go-Hugo, were created by a University of Exeter education expert in collaboration with a primary school specialist leader of education from Sir Robert Geffrey’s School in Saltash.

Now, this novel approach to teaching RE has been recognised at the Times Educational Supplement School’s Awards ceremony by winning the Humanities Award.

Rediscovered World War One novel turned into play

A lost novel by a popular World War One soldier poet has been discovered in a garage and turned into a play which is soon to be performed at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham.

FW Harvey was best known for his poetry and came to be seen as the voice of the Gloucestershire soldier and later of the prisoner of war.

His wartime publications sold extremely well, and for a time he was much better known than now-familiar contemporaries such as Wilfred Owen, Edmund Blunden and Isaac Rosenberg.

Hatherleigh Care Village Fete a success

Cygnet Theatre to host summer course for budding actors

Budding actors ( over the age of 18) are being given the opportunity to attend a fantastic five day course at the Cygnet Theatre.

The course will explore voice, scene work, character development, movement and improvisation leading to an informal showing of work in progress on the final afternoon.

This is an introduction to the types of work undertaken in vocational training. There will be an opportunity to audition for the Cygnet Company to anyone interested.

Roadworks to begin on the M5

Overnight work will begin on Monday July 14 to resurface a three mile section of the M5 between junctions 27 and 28 leading to smoother journeys.

The improvement will be carried out between 7pm and 6am and will be completed by Friday, 5 September. No work is planned to be carried out at weekends.

Firefighters rescue six year old boy

Firefighters were called to Richmond Road, St Davids, Exeter late last night to rescue a six year old boy who had become trapped inside a first floor bathroom.

Crews used a short extension ladder and small tools to rescue the child.

Engaging with disabled people via Blue Light Day

People with disabilities and their carers are invited to experience a festival of activities at a ‘Blue Light Day’ event on Tuesday 29th July 2014. University announces Honorary Degree recipients

Tony Rowe, Chairman and Chief Executive of Exeter Chiefs Rugby, and Philip Bostock, retired chief executive of Exeter City Council, will receive honorary degrees from the University of Exeter next week.

Joining them will be more than 4,000 graduands who will be personally greeted by the University’s Chancellor, Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE DL, who will be presiding over 17 ceremonies.
