Honorary degree for former Exeter MP

Former city MP Ben Bradshaw thanked University of Exeter students for “all they have given the city” as he joined their graduation ceremony to be given his own honorary degree.

Sir Ben’s award was in recognition of public service, including his achievements to boost the quality of schools in Exeter, bring jobs to the city and his campaigning for LGBT rights.

Man dies in Devon tractor accident

A man died when his tractor overturned after leaving a field.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene at Northmostown near Sidmouth yesterday afternoon (Monday May 19).

The tractor had been towing a trailer when it overturned just before 12:50pm. The male driver was trapped and despite the efforts of emergency crews died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Communities to set restorative sanctions

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has begun a consultation process which will see communities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly set their own list of restorative sanctions for low level offences.

Mr Hogg is asking individuals and organisations across the peninsula to take part in the survey on a new Government initiative, the Community Remedy, which will give victims a say in how those who commit low level crime and antisocial behaviour are dealt with.

Women bishops legislation passed by diocesan synod

An overwhelming majority of Exeter's diocesan synod has voted to approve the new legislation to allow women to be become bishops.

There was only a short 30 minute debate, during which members of synod paused for a moment of silent reflection.

Prebendary Sam Philpott said there was no need for speeches but the "real agenda is to begin to imagine life beyond the legislation."

"We need to get on and be the Church, shining clear for the people of Devon," he said, to applause.

Funding boost for Cranbrook community efforts

Communities in Cranbrook will soon begin to feel the benefit of money from East Devon District Council and Devon County Council after Broadclyst Parish Council successfully bid for £4,000 from the Parishes Together Fund.

Broadclyst Parish Council has allocated another £1,500 to the fund, so there is £5,500 available.

The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is in line for a prestigious national award for its work to promote the highest standards of patient safety and care.

The Trust has been shortlisted four separate times for the Patient Safety and Care Awards 2014, led by flagship publications Nursing Times and the Health Service Journal.

Motorcyclist dies in A35 collision

A motorcyclist has died after being involved in a collision with a milk tanker on the A35 near Honiton.

The accident happened yesterday (Sunday) about one mile from Honiton on the Axminster Road shortly after 3.45pm.

The 49-year-old male motorcyclist from Honiton, who was riding a 750cc Kawasaki motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin for have been informed.

Woman airlifted to hospital

A woman has been airlifted to hospital after being involved in a car accident which involved her needing to be cut from her vehicle.

The incident, which took place at Pinhoe Road at just after 2pm yesterday (Sunday), saw the woman's car collide with another car and van.

One fire appliance from Middlemoor Exeter and one fire appliance from Danes Castle Exeter attended.

On arrival they found the female trapped in her vehicle.

She was released using hydraulic cutting gear.

Farmer sentenced for animal welfare offences

A Mid Devon farmer, who pleaded guilty to a range of animal welfare offences, has received a life-time ban on keeping all animals and a 12 month suspended sentence.

Philip Govier, 69, of Willtown Farm, Clayhidon, on the Devon Somerset border, pleaded guilty to offences in January after allowing the carcases of dead animals to be eaten by dogs and predators, and leaving his cattle in such condition that they developed inflammation of the skin.

Firefighters rescue elderly man from toilet

Firefighters were called to a property in Topsham Road, Topsham after an elderly male had become trapped inside a bathroom.

An appliance from Topsham attended the incident which took place yesterday (Sunday) at 9.44am.

The male was released, unharmed, by crew who used small tools to make the release.

Firefighters tackle forage harvester blaze

Firefighters from both Middlemoor and North Tawton were called to tackle a forage harvester fire which took place at Ruxford Barton, Sandford, Crediton last night.

The incident, which occured just after 10pm, saw firefighters extinguish the harvester which had become extremely alight.

Crews used two hose reel jets and small tools to extinguish the fire. Mobile lighting was also used to make the harvester safe.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirm this was an accidental fire, believed to be caused by an electrical fault.
