Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

First students graduate from course funded by PCC’s small grant

The first three students have completed an exciting course funded by Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg’s small grant scheme.

Grow 4 Good, based in the grounds of Dartmoor Zoo, Sparkwell, received a grant of £2,789 from Tony Hogg’s small grant scheme for a new project called Ticket 2 Work which allows 12 people between 16 and 25 to achieve the City and Guilds NPTC level 2 certificate of competence in brushcutting.

Cancer survivor to start Race for Life

A courageous schoolgirl who has survived leukaemia will sound an air horn to start Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Exeter on Sunday, 27 July at 10am.

Jasmine Larkman, aged 11, from Crediton, will be the guest of honour at the event at Westpoint Exeter.

She will start the formidable army of nearly 4,000 women on their way round the 5k and 10k routes to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work.

1 in 3 admit speeding on country roads

Drivers are being urged to slow down on country roads this summer to enable families, walkers, cyclists and horse riders to enjoy great British countryside, as a survey reveals that a huge proportion treat them like racetracks.

Results out today from road safety charity Brake and Digby Brown solicitors reveal one in three drivers (33%) admit driving too fast for safety on country roads, by speeding, taking bends fast or overtaking. Four in 10 (37%) have had a near-miss on country roads, while driving, walking or cycling.

Story Time with Barnardo’s and John Lewis

Local children’s authors are supporting Story Time with Barnardo’s and John Lewis Exeter, a fun and engaging storytelling campaign which aims to highlight the importance of interaction and communication to a child’s early development whilst raising money to support the UK’s most vulnerable children.

John Lewis has partnered with the children’s charity to host a series of book readings by children’s authors at John Lewis shops across the country running throughout the summer.

Art project triumphs at national event

A group of youngsters from Devon who have been in the care of Devon County Council have been celebrated at a national event in London to showcase a special Art Project aimed at exploring their dreams and aspirations.

The group who were nominated by invitation only took their work to the Listen Up 2014 expedition event hosted by the ‘Who Cares’ Trust in Westminster. An elegant tea party was held at Exeter University to say thank to hundreds of Hospiscare volunteers.

Glasses of bubbly elderflower were served along with pretty cupcakes, dainty sandwiches and cakes at the glamorous event attended by 450 volunteers from all over Exeter, East and Mid Devon. Cullompton teenager killed in crash

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision near Uffculme on Tuesday night. At approximately 10.40pm on July 22, a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision occurred on the A3440 just outside Uffculme in Mid Devon involving a Yamaha motor cycle. As a result of the collision the rider, an 18-year-old man from the Cullompton area was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries. Arts organisations share funding in Exeter

A number of exciting and emerging arts organisations in Exeter are among those set to benefit from City Council funding.

Kaleider, Double Elephant Print Workshop, Le Navet Bete and Sound Gallery are all being earmarked for core arts funding from Exeter City Council.

The groups have never previously received core arts funding and along with Exeter Phoenix, Exeter Northcott, Theatre Alibi, Bikeshed Theatre and Spacex are being recommended a share of the core arts funding pot for 2015/16.
