Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

Police appeal after 14-year-old is assaulted

Detectives from British Transport Police have released the CCTV image of a man officers would like to speak to after a 14-year-old girl was assaulted at Exmouth station.

The incident happened on Sunday 13 July, as the girl travelled between Exeter and Exmouth.

Detective Constable Dean Jeffery said: “During the journey the man engaged the girl in conversation and, when the train arrived at Exmouth, he walked with her towards the bus station and touched her inappropriately.

“The girl managed to run away and alert the authorities.”

Transport Minister unveils £1.6m new buses for Exeter

Baroness Kramer, Minister of State for Transport yesterday (30 July) unveiled a £1.6m fleet of 12 new Stagecoach buses on a visit to Exeter to see how the bus operator and local authorities are working together to boost public transport in the south-west of England.

Bees can spot which flowers offer best rewards

Bumblebees are able to connect differences in pollen quality with floral features, like petal colour, and so land only on the flowers that offer the best rewards, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Exeter.

Unlike nectar, bees do not ingest pollen whilst foraging on flowers, and so until now it has been unclear whether they are able to form associative relationships between what a flower looks like and the quality of its pollen.

New Mamhead Slipway moves a step closer

The planning application for a new, improved public slipway at Mamhead View, Exmouth, has been submitted and should be considered for approval before the end of the year.

The existing slipway had to be closed in August 2012 for public safety reasons. Surveys showed that the fill material supporting the concrete slab of the slipway had been scoured away.
